Approaching an Object for Sculpting

The way an artist prepares his mind’s eye for sculpting an object can greatly benefit their workflow. Should I start from a sphere? Or should I model a base mesh? What about the Skin Modifier? Better yet, what does this object really even look like? All these questions need to be addressed before sculpting can begin.
