Stream with Moss and Mushrooms Final

A scene built with Megascans assets. This got no love on Artstation. I'm curious if using these assets for artwork is frowned upon? Or, maybe this scene is just not good??? Most of the materials were tweaked to have a wet look. The stream was created with fluid simulator. I figured out how to use the fuzz maps with the Vertex Weight Edit modifier. It masks out the area you want to apply modifiers to. In this case, grow moss.

  • cceroe Wow , thanks for taking the time to explain that to me , I really appreciate it. I am off on my honeymoon tomorrow for a week, but i'll give this a go when I get back. You will probably hear from me when I start to struggle :P , Thanks again :)

  • The moss is awesome! My only possible problem would be the focus/depth of field. The actual focus point of the image is hard to identify, its like my eyes can't focus on anything properly. I am not an expert at this, but I would try fiddling with it...because your scene is good!

frikkr The moss is a particle system. The moss I used is from Megascans. They have maps to plug into your material shader, and displacement maps. There are some free ones to try out, including 3D models. This one is a free moss they used to have available. I mapped out each individual segment of moss, so they a separate objects. There are 71 individual moss particles for this one. The origin points are adjusted for each so they are where the base of each segment would be. Each of those have a Subdivision Surface and Displacement modifier (Turned off in the viewport). Those segments are all grouped together. The particle system uses that group and Pick Random, Rotation, and Scale are checked. Under the Rotation panel (make sure it is checked there too) use Velocity/Hair and give it a little Random starting point. (mine was .1 I believe) Then set the Random on the right as much as you like. It's a good idea to set the number of particles low to test in the viewport, and then set it high for the render. Ok, that's a start for you!

  • cceroe yes mainly the moss please, I thought at first that it was a particle system. It looks really nice because it is actually part of the geometry and you can see it in the silhouette rather than just a normal map. This would be a great asset to learn for a project I am currently working on. I have never used megascans assets no. Thankyou!

frikkr Hi Matthew. Which part would you like to know about? How to use the fuzz map? Have you used Megascans assets?

  • The moss ir really well done :) , It would be interesting to know where you learned this technique so I can have a go myself. Great work!
