Just finished the HUMAN course! I enjoyed every step of the journey and discovered a true passion for 3D portraiture while creating this piece! Ever grateful for Kent Trammell’s incredible masterclasses and expert workflow, learned so much, thank you!!

  • The skin shader looks nearly perfect on the close-up where only a part of the face is visible, but at longer distances could use a little extra sheen (actually called Clearcoat in the Cycles’ Principled BSDF) to better simulate the glistening of a real, living person’s skin. Gotta be careful, though: it can actually mask some normal map/multires details. On the other hand, by providing a separate normal map in Clearcoat Normal it’s possible to compensate for this effect, and/or otherwise mess with it (tiny beads of perspiration, for example?) Don’t get me wrong: your work is superb. It’s not a criticism: just a suggestion. :-)

Hi anarchymedes :) Thank you! I really appreciate your suggestion, notes are always welcome! Great to know - I’ll definitely do some testing with variations of those you mentioned. Following Kent’s course I created face zones in the material to control some of the specular variation and feel there’s a lot that I could polish to get the skin closer - lots to balance, it’s a journey hey!

  • Absolutely jawdropping. Well done.

  • This is truly fantastic work Rebecca. An amazing portrait and one of the best representations of age that I have seen, specifically regarding the work on the skin tones and age spots.

    Remarkable.

Thank you so much for your comment Amber! I truly appreciate it. For the age spots I tried a combination of skin texture painting with sculpted detail and procedural blemishes from Kent’s course, it was so much fun :)

Oh wow that is so good. I think we can say you've reached enlightenment,Rebecca. I also really like the clay render, I don't know why those are so appealing.

    Excellent work Rebecca!
The hair and beard look really good, the skin texture is also outstanding.
One thing that bothers me a little is his right eyelid, it looks a bit too far from the eyeball.
Not a big deal but it notices on the closeup image and in the reflection in the eye and shadows.
Overall, you have an awesome result.
Congratulations on finishing an epic course.

Hi Adrian, thank you so much for your feedback! :) Thank you for your note on the right eyelid too, I really appreciate it and will absolutely keep it in mind going forward.

  • Oh, this probably took a long time. May I know how much time you have spent to create the hair and bear please?

Hi Naiad! Thanks for your comment, yeah it took awhile :) but I would say that the grooming was one of my favourite parts of the process. The full groom + all hair materials took about 2 weeks to build while I was learning and progressing through the Hair chapter of the HUMAN course. I tried out a lot of variations to get it closer, adding some extra time.
