Road to Human - Self Portrait Final

Here are my favorite final renders from the Road to Human project. While I did take several breaks throughout the process of this project, I have finally gotten to what I would consider the most comfortable 'finishing' point. This was my third or fourth blender project overall, and my second completed project. It was a learning experience for me more than anything, so while I do see the many oversights and flaws in a lot of my finishing renders, I have found a lot of gratification in the skills and knowledge that I have learned to get to this point.

I used my face and hair as a reference, drawing strong influences from video games like The Last of Us II for inspiration on lighting, complexion, and hair. By the time a lot of these renders were done I thought my computer was going to start pushing out eggs with how hard it was working to process these images, so while I wish I had more to show, I am excited to have the renders that did turn out more to my liking.

Any helpful tips or criticism is more than welcome!

  • This is nice, I wish I could do something like this one day. I get Hayley Williams vibes.

  • Simply incredible project! Detailing, colors, light, rendering - all this is veryyyyyy catchy. I admire your work and how much effort you had to put into it! I wish you not to stop at the achieved result and continue to follow your road!

Thank you so much for such kind words, it means a lot to me! I had sooo many frustrating moments where I wanted to give up along the way but I'm so glad I stuck with it in the end! It feels so special to finally be able to share it :)

  • I love it, feels like a character from an 80's adventure movie. I had that haircut last year, so maybe I'm partial to it? The eyes are absolutely fantastic

Wow, thank you so much! It truly means a lot to me! I also had the same haircut last year, lol! I can totally get behind the 80's adventure movie vibe :)

  • Holy smokers, that's awesome. All the details, the lighting, the hair. Outstanding.
Third of fourth project? Yeah I'm just gonna hide in some corner and play with the default cube then lol

Wow, what a kind comment! Thank you so much, I truly appreciate it!!

I feel like I was in a corner crying with the default cube for the first 2 months of this project, LOL. I just graduated to being in a corner and crying at the ungodly render time it took for these...
Especially when I would catch a mistake mid-render and realize I'd have to do it all over again...

Haha that's an eternal corner though. It's got walls, floors and ceiling of mirrors and there's no escape.

  • Opening the topmost render (the one with a firelight, like bending over a fire), and having read the project title, I almost expected to see a beautiful Stone Age girl who was the first of her kind to start, you know, thinking.🤔😁 Who realised that she was, well, different.🧖‍♀️
Not that there’s anything wrong with channeling The Last of Us, but — an alternative perspective?
Oh yes, and I know only too well what it means to push your computer to its limits by striving for realism.😁👍

Lol! Yeah, I think a lot of my inspiration came in through the shaders I used for the freckles, darker under eyes, and dark blush on the cheeks. I also used a lot of reference images for the lighting inspiration and my hair shader :) I'd love to revisit this project eventually or begin a new one and test out some bruising/scarring effects though!

And what’s better for that than the tattoos and tribal marks from the Stone Age?😉

It's looking great, I wish i could do characters and even more realistic characters. She seems familiar somehow, I can't pin point where I know her from. Those second and third renders looks super great, that lighting makes the image go up a level 🤘🏼

Thank you so much! That's so kind of you. I grew up drawing lots and lots of characters and fan art, so I think I ended up using a lot of that knowledge with this project!

  • Outstanding work :)
    I love the lighting choices
