PiBoy XRS Project Work In Progress

This stared as a quad only CGCookie console.  Now It's really a progress report on the PiBoy XRS.

Everything from the Grayscale Greeble City up is today's progress.

Nearly done with the RaspberryPi 4 modeling.
    Greebles everywhere! (Transistors & resistor).

Not sure if this was entirely worth it, but now that I'm this far along I'll finish things up.
I need to do the barrel connector, fix the couple of HDMI connectors, then add some circuit textures.

Maybe add a little noise to the solder joints so they lean just a little one way or the other and/or aren't perfectly the same at the points.

Edit: And I need to add the silk screening!

Shrug. If nothing else I'll have a RaspberryPi 4 model I can use for whatever I'd like.

A little progress here, a little progress there. . .

The board's coming along well, and the cutouts for the ports at the top are done.

Edit: The screw holes for the RaspberryPi line up surprisingly well with the case. I tried to use the advertised dimensions, and things *almost* fit.

Edit 2: Oh my gosh, resistor greebles galore!

If you want, I'd be happy to send you the .blend...

      welltheresyerproblem,
Thanks for the link. I'll check it out when I'm done modeling things. I'm not certain how many little Raspberry Pi greebles I'm going to do, but I'm not quite done with it yet.

Edit: I'd love to checkout the .blend file. Thank you!

  • I do love me some ARM/embedded Linux handheld action. Good stuff!

Thanks welltheresyerproblem. It took me a little longer than intended, but I like how it's turning out.

A little detail on the board and its connectors, a little detail to the top and bottom of the case, and the model's done.

Then just a bit of texturing, and deciding how I want to present it.

    It's coming. . . modeling a RaspberryPi4 to go with this console.
Will probably do a really basic assembly video.

Finally done with that back panel!
I have details to add to the top and bottom of the case, but the detail on the back of the case are done!

    Got the logo and feet.
Just a smidgen of detail left on the back plate. Top and bottom modeling details to do, then decals, and hopefully I'll be done. There was a little more detail to this than I intended.

There are a few problem spots on the PiBox XRS.
    I've circled them in red.
Any suggestions on how to deal with them more effectively would be appreciated. I'll be digging into that this weekend.

I also need to get back to the original Cookie Console to finish that tutorial and turn it in.

That back panel has so many fussy details!

I still have to do the grips on the right, a couple more panels, the word "Experimental", screw holes. . . didn't initially realize just how detailed this thing actually was.

After that I need to do the cut out in the top of the case for the RaspberryPi itself, and details like the ethernet ports.

    Whew!

In the middle of the CGCookie console, I decided to take on the PiBoy XRS. Didn't want to add another WIP, so combined the two consoles into one.

    https://experimentalpi.com/PiBoy-XRS--Kit_p_59.html

Overall I'm fairly happy with what I have so far. Probably the trickiest thing to deal with are the multiple diameters of the curves on the case edges, and the vent holes along the curves on the back of the case. I may have a bit of cleanup on the vent holes, and a little vertex bumping to make the edge curves more consistent.

    Overall it's been pretty challenging. . .

And, I ended up modifying the wrong .blend file when I added the Pi logo on the back of the case.
Luckily the front and back of the case are separate objects, I don't think I lost anything too critical. I had doubled the loops around the analog controllers on the front of the case to make the holes in the case smooth, and I really don't want to redo that exercise.

I'll probably finish them both up and submit them as one.
