Human Self Portrait Work In Progress

3 loves

I'm really enjoying this class but the Multi Res Modifier is giving me a lot of trouble.  I hit a wall when I got to the texture portion because my first utility texture won't bake, apparently because my multi res sculpt is too far from my base mesh?  I can't seem to get any decent feedback on that but that seems possible.  I can't edit my base mesh at all because the MR Modifier freaks out and my sculpt explodes verts all over the place so I had to do some changes in multi res that were pretty big which would have been much easier in edit mode, namely extending the torso down to accommodate the shirt.

This brings up some questions,  what is the acceptable difference between the base mesh and the MR sculpt?  How do you edit the base mesh without hemorrhaging verts all over the place?  I saw @theluthier doing it but every time I try it's just a mess...

Anyway this is just lit with a point light.  It's coming out pretty well I think but somehow my sculpt leveled up it's sexiness factor over the model (wishful thinking i guess).  The textures are just place holders as I didn't get past baking the utility textures.

Overall I'm okay with starting from scratch as the sculpt process is my main focus here but I would love to understand the MR modifier better... at present it's almost unusable for me.

Also I added a render of just the glasses because they came out pretty sweet.

  • Hey Autobodhi, this is looking super nice! Kent had the same issues with the MR Modifier. He called it a “Silly” error. Most likely you can provide your own adjective to describe it. In one of the videos he demonstrated how to recover from the error. I haven’t gotten that far, but I get the feeling it really becomes a hassle.

Hey man thank you =) This is actually something else I believe. The infamous silly bug is related to the data transfering from a shape key to the MR. I only had that happen once or twice. This other mesh meltdown happens regardless of whether or not I have any shape keys and isn't affected by changing them. It happens (almost) any time I change my base mesh with the MR and I don't know how to fix it except smoothing and resculpting the affected area. sometimes it's just a small area and occasionally the whole mesh. I don't know why I have this problem.

Dude that first render with the glasses looks very good. I'm glad to hear you don't mind starting from scratch, because I know the second time around you'll do much better as all the past experience will come into place. Always remember it's about practice practice practice. Start another model after this one, go go go.

Thanks man. Yeah a little disappointing to be sure but practice is what it's really about and I'm getting plenty of that =) I'm doing other stuff alongside that is a little different, I'll post some...
