FireAlpaca art: Lizard Scales Final

I did this one before I worked on the velvet attempts. I'm still having a hard time making things look smooth when I draw but I'm still happy with this.

  • Thank you!

Yeah, looking at it now, I can see that it doesn't really look like scales wrapped around a spherical form as much as it looks like I cut out a circle piece from a larger image of something with scales.

As far as putting bumps/rough texture of the scales in the image, I was aware that was something I should've done, but I ended up shying away from doing that due to my inability to make the shading/colouring look smooth in the first place. I've been drawing for a while but I still have problems with that when it comes to digital art. I guess I just need more practice.

    Thanks again for commenting! :)

  • Hey there! Nice efforts, and I know how tough these material studies are!

Right now you have the smooth shine of a sphere, but to get a real feel for the scales, you also need to incorporate the bumps of the scales, as well as the texture being "placed" around the sphere's form. That first reference is very good to show how the texture looks with certain lighting and angles along the form. Try "feeling" out that texture, it should help a great deal.

    Keep it up! :D
