It sounds like there's no way to get shadows from an HDRi in Eevee. Is that the case? I'll need to add a sun lamp for sure?
Mention Jonathon Lampel to see if he has anything so say on this, but I would bet that HDRI is for cycles only.

To answer the question, mostly yes. You can sort of get shadows via irradiance volumes, but the severe limitations of that will be shown in a later lesson. I'd recommend using a sun lamp like you mentioned.
