Did the whole forum just reverse itself?

Have I clicked something I shouldn't have in my profile or is it intentional that the forum post order is now backwards? Only wondering because I got a shock when I just came on now and every post I read was in backwards order of time/date.....

I don't think you've changed any settings, it seems to happen to me also Matthew

  • Matthew Fricker(frikkr) replied

Hmm , strange. I've not seen anything mentioned in the forum about it as far as I can remember. Perhaps it's a bug? You would think a large change like that would have been announced otherwise.

  • William Miller(williamatics) replied

I'm writing this to see if this is happening to me as well.

  • William Miller(williamatics) replied

    It is!

  • Matthew Fricker(frikkr) replied

It must be a bug , they would have announced a huge change like this otherwise. It's pretty weird reading this all the wrong way around after years of reading it the other way, hope it gets sorted soon...

  • Mark Smith(me1958424) replied

if it means getting the newest post first instead of scrolling all the way to the end...

all I have to say is it took long enough!!

  • Karen Trevino(ketre) replied

He told us about it in the forum topic below as it was asked it it could be done in that topic

Citizen Collaboration: Modeling Heavy Equipment (Backhoe)

  • William Miller(williamatics) replied

Yes, but it's really awkward to follow a conversation that's going the wrong way.

  • Shawn Blanch(blanchsb) replied

You can thank the Backhoe crew. We may have instigated it haha. Our forum was getting 6 pages long and we are posting on it multiple times a day. Going to page 6 each time we get there was getting tiring LOL

  • William Miller(williamatics) replied

Then couldn't it have been done for that thread only?

  • Keith (beefkeef) replied

Yea that's true. My mouse wheel just did a little sigh of relief!  😁

  • Shawn Blanch(blanchsb) replied

I'm not a web developer but that would be tough to pick one forum to alter and none of the others. I believe it is being tested to be honest. I dunno about everyone else but I want to see newest content at the top and on page #1 rather than scrolling all day long to get to the nitty gritty. That's just me. We suggested it be changed and there were several who agreed.

I don't think there was any ill will. If you look at the Gallery it has been formatted this way for ages and I like it that way. It is getting more consistent if you ask me. There are many popular forums on the web are done this way.

  • Matthew Fricker(frikkr) replied

Yeah the reverse conversation is really annoying and arkward as williamatics says. I also agree with you me1958424  so maybe a better way would have been to keep it the same way but just rig it so that when you click a notification it takes you straight to the relevant post and a way of skipping to the latest post quickly. I can't say Iv'e ever seen a forum that is in reverse like this and it is very weird to me. Perhaps even a way to choose either format in your personal preferences might be good?

Also , if you have never read a thread before that is very long , then you would have to read the top of the first page to see what the post is all about , and then skip to the every end to read the first reply and then work your way upwards from the bottom of that page to the top and then through all the other pages in reverse order until you got back to the top of the first page... to me its like reading the first page of a book and then going right to the end for page two and reading it backwards from bottom to top until you get to the end on page two..... just too un-natural for me personally.

@theluthier has this been intentional or just a bug do you know?

  • Matthew Fricker(frikkr) replied

Haha , damn you backhoe crew :P .

I think its just one of those things that not everyone is going to like so there is going to be a big difference of opinion from the regular users of the forum. That and the fact that it just happened without notice or any kind of poll to see if it was something that the majority would be in favour of made me think it was just a bug of some sort.

As I've said above , if there was a way to make the reverse forum order be optional then it would keep everyone happy , but i'm no web developer so I have no idea.....

True, but that would happen only once,  Every other time you would have an advantage.

To be honest, and that might just be me, but the 'Suggestions for new courses' post has (now) 10 pages and even when it was 'in the right order' I never read through all the posts, that's just too much even for me;)

This was requested and some people will love it and some people will hate it and others will just have to get used to it, what can you do?

A user preference setting would be great, but I have no idea how do-able that would be (maybe we are spoiled by the high configurability of Blender...).

  • Matthew Fricker(frikkr) replied

Yeah man , I get you , thanks for the reply. I'm really just putting out ideas and voicing my own personal opinion :)

I don't handle change well ha , but at least now I know its not a bug and can start getting used to it then if it's here to stay!

  • spikeyxxx replied

Well Matthew, I was one of those people that voted for this change and I like it, but I still have to get used to it;)

And voicing personal opinions is always a good thing!

  • Shawn Blanch(blanchsb) replied

    Sorry frikkr

I'm not saying we were the ones who flipped the switch or even said to do it now, it just kinda happened overnight haha. I don't even know if the change is permanent to be honest.

We were just getting tired of having to navigate to page 6 and to the bottom every time. Granted I would agree. An announcement that the change was coming could have been in order.

The concern regarding auto-navigation to new posts is something that the crew is definitely aware of. but apparently trying something new like flipping forum direction was a lot easier in the code for a start. I think there can be a forum topic dedicated to the community voting on the proper structure of a forum post layout. At the end of the day our voice sounds like it is being heard. Just look at what a small number of people were able to gethappen.

If people hate the new layout perhaps we could brainstorm what a good layout would look like. Or 3 different functional layouts and let the community vote which one they preferred. You won't be able to make everyone happy but I think throwing a vote would be a good community way of.

frikkr My apologies: The decision to reverse thread pagination was intentional. As mentioned it came about from the Backhoe thread which is an exceptionally long thread. It seemed like a simple enough change that made sense for that context but it seems likely that we implemented the change too soon or in a less-than-ideal way.

I think this issue is indeed made worse by the fact that thread notifications seem to have a problem linking directly to the relevant reply, defaulting instead to the first page every time. In hindsight I'm thinking this needs to be solved first.

I will talk with @nphaskins today about getting this sorted!
