CG Cookie Dough's Polybook

I just figured, why not?

I'm making this "Shot mug mug shot" and I'm trying to figure out what the best way to make a bullet go through this is. I want it to shatter realistically.
Just so you know, I made this after doing that sculpting Melvin course.  All of Melvin is sculpted.

    Hi Cookie Dough,

    that looks great!

I guess you'll want that bullet animated...There is an old tutorial somewhere using the Blender Game Engine, but that felt very clumsy.

The best way I think, is to use the Fracture Modifier Branche. Go to: http://blenderphysics.com/fracturemodifier/

There is a Download tab with the three major OS s and a link to a video how to use this together with 2.8 (a workaround, no 2.8 version yet).

Jonathan Lampel has also done a livestream: https://cgcookie.com/live_streams/exploring-the-blender-fracture-modifier

When I try to render it, it is just black or transparent. Do you know what might be causing this?

  • Cookie Dough(cgcdough) replied

DUHH, I had some stuff in the video sequence editor that didn't exist on my computer anymore.

  • Cookie Dough(cgcdough) replied

The only problem I'm having is the pieces collide with each other.

  • spikeyxxx replied

    I don't think that's very noticeable;)

    Looks great!

  • William Miller(williamatics) replied

I'd make it so that the pieces fly all over the place instead of simply falling down.  Other than that, I like it.

  • spikeyxxx replied

Well, those pieces are not very heavy, so the impact from the bullet (its energy) will send them flying away, I'd expect.

  • Shawn Blanch(blanchsb) replied

Yeah it is awesome. +1 for making the pieces have more impact energy transferred. when I wanted to do that I used a larger object and made it invisible and hit it going in an upwards arc at around the same time the bullet would “hit” the mug.  No one ever “knew” the difference heh heh.

maybe add a little camera shake just after impact to really sell the effect.

  • spikeyxxx replied

blanchsb or just make the bullet heavier;)

  • Cookie Dough(cgcdough) replied

blanchsb I'm not really sure how to do a good camera shake. I think in this scene, it will be ok without it, but if I had an explosion or something to that extent, I would look into how to do the camera shake.

  • Shawn Blanch(blanchsb) replied

@cgcookiedough  Not sure if this works with blender 2.8 but it might just be that easy: https://cgcookie.com/articles/creating-a-great-game-camera

  • Cookie Dough(cgcdough) replied

I still feel like it would be for something bigger. It is only a 9mm bullet. If it were a rifle that shot it, that might be big enough to justify using a camera jolt.

Thanks for the idea though. I can still use this stuff latter on. I appreciate you taking the time to help.

  • Cookie Dough(cgcdough) replied

I think I'm ready to put this in the gallery.

Here is what his mug shot looks like:

Here is the node monster I made creating him:

So you know, just because I have a lot of nodes, it doesn't mean I know what I'm doing. It just means I have a lot of nodes.

  • Shawn Blanch(blanchsb) replied

Nice work I like it a lot

  • Cookie Dough(cgcdough) replied

A friend of my friend and I are having a competition. He says he knows he's better at blender than I am. I want to set him in his place.
I need your help while I am doing this, because I have no idea how good he really is. He didn't send me any of his work.
I want to learn as much as I can in the time of the competition. It starts tomorrow and will go on for one week.
My friend, who doesn't know anything about blender, will be choosing the topic for the competition and will announce it tonight.

  • Cookie Dough(cgcdough) replied

Looks like the theme is going to be Monopoly.
Tomorrow I'm going to block out a few concepts.

  • Cookie Dough(cgcdough) replied

I'm going to have things you would find on a farm as the characters.
For the image, I'm gong to do it like how it is on the original game, but farm land instead of buildings and a farm version of the monopoly guy.

Dead line is tomorrow night. Fingers crossed that I can get this done in time.
