BC1-1908 Homework - Ben Reichel

Collaborations

I'm doing the chest.  Probably biting off more than I can chew for a single week but I wanted to challenge myself.  I've watched the chest video and I was already planning on going through it again to do the model so this was perfect timing.

notcastanza Beautiful work Ben. I love the deep variations in value of the wood and metal.

notcastanza Maybe look around in the display's settings and disable gaming related settings?

  • Kent Trammell replied

notcastanza It may look a little dim in terms of lighting, but the texture looks much better! All those lovely details are reading well now. Nice job - I've upgraded your grade to an A.

notcastanza Late to the party, but hey!  That chest looks good!  Nice texture work.

Playing around with some volumetrics and lighting.  I don't have the fog quite right  but I'm starting to like the presentation.  I also added in some basic background shapes to give it a cave type of feel.  Any tips on making a good fog effect?

    notcastanza Love the presentation!

Did you plug a Volume Scatter Node into the Volume of the World?

  • Ben Reichel(notcastanza) replied

spikeyxxx No, I used a box for the volume container.  I'll throw it on the world and see how it looks.  Thanks!

  • Ben Reichel(notcastanza) replied

Thanks for the advice Spikey!  Adding the volumetrics to the world helped.

    nice job Ben.

notcastanza Looks good! I like it!

    Btw: it's week 3;)

notcastanza Very decent result Ben, congratulations.

Eventually if you have time and maybe Kent arrives a bit later with the grades, suggesting to apply the lattice modifier what he showed in the tutorial, that would make it even better with a relatively small effort

    Week 4 Final Render

Thanks everyone for the wonderful feedback!  This will be my "final final render for real.jpg"

notcastanza nice job finishing strong, Ben! I really like the golden illumination coming from the inside the chest. It's a good way to foreshadow the treasure inside.

I have a couple suggestions to offer:

    • The point lamp inside is noticeable as a distinct small point of light. Therefore it reads more like a tiny flashlight than a chest full of shiny gold. To fix this you can just move the lamp further down into the bottom of the chest and possibly increase the strength.

    • Overall the image is pretty dark. This is reasonable if the focus is mostly aimed at the golden glow however it hides a lot of great detail that you put into the model and texture:

    • At this particular camera angle I can't tell what the wood floor is. We're just seeing the ends of the wood boards and it's probably better to hide the floor if it's not going to be more obvious.

I hope those are helpful notes. It's a B+ from me this week. Congrats on finishing the class strong, Ben!
