BC1-1908 Homework - Erik Sharp

Collaborations

Hello, I am software engineer from London and I enjoy working with digital arts in my free time.

I've been doing the odd tutorial here and there and took this class to help make the transition to 2.80. I am hoping to start to be able to create more of what is in my head rather than just being able to follow along with tutorials. Although saying that, my first stab at the homework was to learn the technique in creating the treasure chest. I am hoping to have enough time to create a few more pieces to submit for the homework.

I welcome any criticism that you may have. Thanks.

    Homework submission week 2

I started off with doing the texturing for the sword.

    Painting done in Blender

Added some detail in Photoshop using the UV export as a guide

Here's the final result for the diffuse on the sword:

    Chest texturing:

    With DVC

Final with an additional floor texture

captainbedpan Awesome job texturing this week, Erik! The details on the sword are great: Thread/hemp-like handle, edge and scratch detail, the rune design - It's all really nice and well done.

The treasure chest looks good, I'd say on par with the one in the course. But compared to the sword it looks under-detailed to me. You set the bar a little higher with the sword and I would have liked to see the chest match it.

Still, you've done excellent work this week: It's an A+ from me 👍

Been working through shading my sword and I have noticed that there is a difference with the render and the viewport with Eevee. I know that Bloom doesn't come through the render and that we are to add a glare node in compositing, but this appears to be something else. You will see the artefacts on the guard and pommel. I have checked that there isn't extra geometry by using Merge by distance and no vertices were removed. Any help would be appreciated.

    captainbedpan The Viewport looks great!

I can't tell from these images what is going on, but do you maybe have something hidden in the Viewport, that is still rendering?

  • Erik Sharp(captainbedpan) replied

spikeyxxx Thanks Spike! I was rendering a collection instance, but forgot to turn off the original collection. I should have caught that.

captainbedpan Don't worry, that has happened to me many times;)

    Homework submission week 3

I have really enjoyed this course even though the work took me longer than I thought it would. I look forward to practising these techniques with my own ideas as others have, but I thought that following along initially would give me the best chance of success without too much frustration. Looking forward to the next class.

captainbedpan This is a great final render! Everything really came around full-circle, Erik.

Detail looks ways more consistent between the sword and the chest now. Whether you added more detail or it just came out well in the material, good stuff. I really like the golden illumination from inside the chest. My guess is you put a yellow lamp in there, seeing the bright reflection on the chest rim. That's an excellent choice to sell the golden-ness of the treasure 👌

My only suggestion is to desaturate the floorboards so A) they don't blend in with the chest as much and B) the chest stands out a bit more:

That's a tiny note though. It's an A+ from me this week 👏

@theluthier Thanks a lot Kent. Desaturating the floor really pushes the eye to the main subject. I am excited to see what I can do with these new skills and really looking forward to participating in another class. It was a great course and class.
