Collaborations

(Okay, a little bit frustrated with myself cause this is the second time i wrote this, the first time i accidentally closed the tab and all the typing, gone T__T should've copy-pasted it onto notepad!)

Hello! I've been a member for a bit here, watching a couple of courses and submitting a few exercises. I started 3D modelling in Blender back in January, and while it was great for good while, it started slowing down around March/April, and eventually it was difficult to find motivation to learn at all, I've barely learned anything in the last few months, I only have my laziness to blame.

But, once I've heard that Blender 2.8 had an expected release date, plus a CG Cookie Class to come alongside the release (The treasure chest course was a bonus!) I decided to rekindle the flame!

I'm quite a beginner, so i'm keeping my homework simple, i picked one of my favorite sword designs to model, the Zweihänder!

As you can see, nothing too crazy. This is just the base design I'm going for, i'll be looking at extra images to see if i can add on to it without too much difficulty, but it might just end up as it is as well, i'm not sure.

This is what i have so far, i am running into some issues (they're both similar i think) i'll post them in a reply instead.

syaz Just imagine how weighty that sword would be. It would certainly leave a mark on its victims. Nicely done.

maybe i should've realized that fact after the only result from searching rusted gold is from a video game (dark souls' rusted gold coin)...oh well! I still enjoyed painting the rust, though :)

syaz There really is something to be said about artistic license to break "natures rules"; freedom to create even if it can be scientifically disproven. Recently I watched Tarantino's new film "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" where he tells an alternate history story, similar to his "Inglorious Basterds" film as well. It's so interesting what this kind of freedom that flies in the face of objective truth can do to my brain - it can be fascinating and thought-provoking to say the least.

I say all that to say that in the land of artistic creation, gold can definitely rust and you're right to have enjoyed painting it :)

syaz Late to the party.  Good effort on the sword.  I have to agree with Jake on the handle wrap portion; it looks like it had less care than the blade.  But, this will look neat with some shaders!

    @theluthier

Thank you, it was quite motivational reading this actually haha

Indeed, it looks quick and dirty, but i decided to remodel the lower handler and redo UV/Texturing all over again, i might re-use the old texture for the main blade, its going to require some precise image editing but if its too much to do it might just be easier to re-texture paint again

I personally think it looks way better than my old handle!

At the pace i'm going, i think it will finish today and i can move on to shading tomorrow!

syaz The new handle looks great!

I thought it was too flat to be comfortably hold in your hands;)

    Looking forward to your progress.

    Homework Week 3 Submission

A bit of new shine, a bit of old rust......okay lets be real thats not very realistic, but i like the outcome!

Man...regardless of my grade for week 3, this class was an experience! I personally learned a lot (especially working on a deadline!)
The most difficult part? Texturing! Good lord, the rust painting took a long time, and the fact that i re-modeled the handle AND re-did the UV's which prompted re-texturing again, it's a miracle i completed it! The rust paint texture did not help in shading too, as whenever i tried to make the rust not shine, the gold would look really strange, eventually i toned down the rust and it fixed most of the issues. While shading was fun, it was a hassle, because of my poor texture (i think) having all sorts of gradient colors that made the shiny parts/non shiny parts look really strange. But as i said, i just toned down the rust (there was a LOT of it) and it fixed most of my issues, overall, my shading isnt super impressive or complex, but i think it compliments the blade nicely...for my skill, atleast :P

All in all, this is my final product, I did not have much time to myself this week, so i'm gonna take it easy for now (i'll be there for the wrapup stream hopefully!) and i hope there will be more classes like these soon! i'll try not to suffer in silence and be more active in my threads next time!

    Cheers

I'm so happy to hear that you learned during the class. Mission accomplished! ✊

syaz Nice job finishing up your Zweihänder! Your gold material reads pretty well, with the subtle bloom making it pop. However I find the gold pommel to be realistically gold where the cross-guard and blade are more stylistically gold. The main difference I see is the pommel has more reflectivity. Personally I like more reflectivity but it's your choice in the end.

You've done really solid work the month and you've earned another A from me. Definitely take it easy and relax before you embark on another project 😴
