Homework thread! To no one's surprise, I'm going with a sword :D
Here's my reference. It's a Katzbalger type sword. There's also some utensils(?) that go in the scabbard.
Here's what I blocked out yesterday. I'll finish the first step today and see what details I can add in. Stylizing real life stuff is tough.
Week 1 Homework Submission
@theluthier Thanks for reminding me! Yes it's final. I'll update my first post so it's tidy.
@drgnclw Your sword turned out beautifully. One of the most fully realized sword models with the scabbard, belt/strap, and utensils. My only criticism is a few points of noticeable lo-poly jaggedness:
I recommend beveling these edges to smooth them out a bit. But that's a tiny note overall. This is a hard A from me! It will look great textured + shaded.
PS: Thank you for being present in the other homework threads as a VA. Your helpfulness in this way is very appreciated.
@theluthier Thanks. The places that stick out most to me is the belt and parts of the hilt. However, the belt looked alright when I used a color grid on top of it to see how the uvs look.
And I'm imagining the hilt will look smoother once painted. If not, going back and adding a bevel isn't all that difficult :)
I was gonna tackle everything at once on Saturday because I'm a bit busy during the week but I found some free time today and got the UVs out of the way.
Here's UVs
The top part belongs to the belt. It goes on and and on for a while. If you don't know what happens whenever a UV island is outside of the UV space, it comes around from the other side. I will paint only one section of the belt and the rest will come for free without visible repetition.
To get this result, I used an array and a curve modifier to create the belt then I unwrapped the original rectangular piece and adjusted UV Offset under its array modifier. Something like this won't play nice with baking since there's overlapping but in the context of hand painting, it works in my favor.
Week 2 Homework Submission
I switched between Blender and SP a couple of times while trying to figure out an approach to paint this. Also dragged my feet a bit while painting so not much is done. I'm calling it done for the week as today's my day off.
@drgnclw looking good, too bad you did not had the time to work the rest of the sword, as for the UV, they look quite clean, too bad you have that unused space there
@drgnclw This looks so good! I hope we get to see the utensils and scabbard textured as well!
@drgnclw Your sword turned out wonderfully! All the edge and crevice highlighting makes your details POP 🤩
I really love how this turned out. A little unfortunate that the scabbard and utensils had to be nixed, but the sword alone is very well done. Definitely an A from me this week 👍
The light will dance on the edge highlighting when shaded and lit!
ssmurfmier1985 @ghujelk @theluthier Thanks! I wish I could spend some more time texturing. But I'll texture the rest this weeks for sure. Looking forward to the next stream!
It's been ages since I posted in this thread :D
@theluthier I wasn't able to check the forums much last week. I'm really sorry about that.
I finally dedicated some more time and finished texturing. I went over the sword and pushed the colors more. So here's the late homework submission for texturing. I hope I'll be able to finish the rest next week.
Scabbard
The wood texture on the utensils were a bit hurried
Sword
@drgnclw Wow, this looks really really good. You're truly put a lot of effort into each object and texture. It's going to look magnificent with shading and lighting! I'll update your week 2 grade to A++ 👏

No worries! You've been plenty helpful this month 👌
