BC1-1908 Homework, Kaj Suominen

Collaborations

Rethinked whole thing and decided to go with the chest afterall. and if i have time more i'll do bigger scene, keeping things simple on this after havin a talk with a good friend and actually looking my calendar. :)

Week 1 Homework Submission

not sure if i should have kept the faceted looks on the handles and round pieces, but decided to smooth them out nevertheless. onto texturing. :)

and bonus, the single objects that are instanced across

Week 2 Homework Submission

Still workin on the extra pieces for final scene, but finished the chest painting and uv. did bit of testing on shading already

Week 3 Homework Submission

Ok, here it is final piece. had lot of fun with this one. :)

I love how you stuck with all of the concepts of the chest but made it your own.  I work in IT so I can totally relate to "Scope Creep".  Sometimes it is just hard to slow the creative brain down.

  • Kaj Suominen(louhikarme) replied

notcastanza Thanks, the metal pieces were the hardest thing to "break down" so i would need to do minimal amount of denting to them and still maintain uniqueness when rotating them. i also work in it field on dayjob. :)

  • Kaj Suominen(louhikarme) replied

@theluthier updated the main post with homework for week2.

  • odunov replied

louhikarme I like the look of that!

  • Kaj Suominen(louhikarme) replied

    @drgnclw Thanks! :)

@theluthier oh btw, one thing now that i remembered it. the way you said my name in livestream. Its bit off. you can think word "sky". and drop the s out. thats how my name is spelled. :)

  • Clint Johnson(clintjohnson) replied

louhikarme man, now that I've messed around a little bit with UV maps and know a tiny bit about them, it's really cool to see yours!!

  • Kaj Suominen(louhikarme) replied

time to finally build the scene aswell.

will tweaking things. but actually managed to caught up. :) which is nice.

  • Kaj Suominen(louhikarme) replied

Decided to zoom into the chest more. the lighting needs still bit more work.

i'll post shader stuff here bit later, once i've cleaned up them. :)

louhikarme Kaj I'm conflicted about your project. On one hand I LOVE that you incorporated the tropical Eevee environment! On the other hand I feel like your chest model was headed in a more realistic/detailed direction which would have done the chest more justice in my opinion.

Of course this could have been your intention the whole time (forgive me if you stated that and I missed it). But my expectations were high to see a wonderfully detailed texture to accent your chest model. What you have is more simplified and stylistic. The metal texture looks good but the wood is particularly simple by comparison. It looks like the brown only has lightened edges but no wood grain variation in the brown tone.

I don't mean to rain on your parade. I probably just had the wrong expectations. Even if I didn't expect this texture style, again I really like that you incorporated the tropical environment. It's an A from me 👍

  • Kaj Suominen(louhikarme) replied

@theluthier Thanks Kent, I actually went with realistic textures at first. You might have gotten from me asking substance stuff since its for mainly realistic stuff, but after a day, it didn't feel right, meaning, i would have had to make the meshes look more realistic aswell. there was this uncanny feel to it, that you get on models that tries to be realistic but somethings is wrong..

And then i decided that i want to try out the stylized chest aswell, and since i had watched the eevee enviroment prior, i went for that route. loved the stream btw, learned bunch of things from that aswell.

the planks, yeah, now that you mention it i can see that the bump doesn't show up at all. i'll need to double check the chest materials, i swear there was bump! :) I'll address that on the final image.

  • Kaj Suominen(louhikarme) replied

@theluthier yeah. double error on my part. i had normals unconnected in the material duh.. and on substance i had the wood grain layer disabled when i had exported textures. double duh. must have been when i was testing stuff out with more simplified approach and disabled more than i meant.

need to still think a bit if this is now where i want it to be. maybe give it a rest for a day and come back on friday. :)

  • Kaj Suominen(louhikarme) replied

below is the shader setups. based on Kent's eevee enviroment nodes, had to make changes due having spherical objects instead just planes.

Sand, the unconnected socket below was experimenting different bumps.

ocean, same here some unconnected nodes due experimenting different looks.

    far islands

    and compositing nodes.

how it looks from above. water necessarily didnt need to be transparent and certainly looks off from this angle

  • Kaj Suominen(louhikarme) replied

well found out why things were buggin me even after correcting the mistakes on material textures.. the crevices didn't have any depth. they were all lit up and not darkened.

corrected that, and also desaturated the colors on metal. and finally added lattice to give bit more volume to the chest, which i should have done on week 1, but it slipped from my mind.

  • spikeyxxx replied

louhikarme That certainly looks a lot better!

Like what the Lattice did to the chest!

Maybe a bit more connection between the chest and the background?

And I mean by adjusting the background towards the chest, not by changing the chest!

Probably not all of the background, but just giving the sand a bit more structure would do a lot I expect...

  • Kaj Suominen(louhikarme) replied

spikeyxxx Thanks, i'll have to think that sand, i did some minor color changes to it already since i wanted deeper shadows on it.

  • silentheart00 replied

louhikarme Late to the party.  This is really shaping up well!  Good work.

  • Kaj Suominen(louhikarme) replied

    silentheart00 thanks.

i think here is the final piece. will sleep over it. but propably not changing anything, unless gettin a lightbulb moment. :)

  • Kaj Suominen(louhikarme) replied

@theluthier updated the first post on week3 homework.

the whole scene thing grew slowly, but this time i managed to keep it under wraps and not get carried away, like the other recent project. so personally this was victory in many battles to come. not that i have that much time to chest bump, next one awaits. aswell my daily sculpts. :)

thanks for excellent courses and tutorials you keep providing at cgcookie. :)

  • Kent Trammell replied

louhikarme Looking good, Kaj. The colors are working very well; very appealing to me. Something about the island peaks in the background have a lovely style to them.

My one suggestion is that the sand could use a particulate speckle layer to them to ready more like sand. That's the one thing that feels noticeably less-detailed that the rest of the scene.

Still it's an A from me. Thanks for joining the class. It's been a pleasure as always :)
