I just finished the 'getting started' part of the 'introduction to blender' learning flow. I am a complete beginner. With the 2.8 right around the corner, I am thinking of skipping the 'making things move' part and going directly to the 'rendering your creations part'. Is this a good idea? Or shall I just go ahead and to the animation part?

You can follow the courses that interest you. If you have no intention of doing any kind of animation right now then skip it. The flow is designed to guide you but you are free to skip courses within it.
