Polybook, procyonlotor

I've been inspired to start one of these.  I am attempting to do one sculpt everyday for 90 days.  I haven't participated in sculpt January before so I grabbed the calendars from the last 2 years and will be doing those this month and next and then participating come January.  I am hoping this will be a good place to post for feedback.  I won't post all of them probably, but the ones I really want feedback on I will. Here is the male portrait sculpt.  Feedback definitely appreciated.  Anatomy isn't my strong suit, and I am really trying to push my learning there especially:

    I have altered the deal...

Sculpting took kind of a backseat for December, but don't worry, they should be returning in January as I am hoping to participate in sculpt January still.  I have an out of town trip the first weekend which may interfere a little, but in general the sculpts should be coming back next month.  I opted to start getting my feet wet with animation this month, partly because I have meant to do so for a long time now, and partly because I found myself at an impasse in some situations with modeling where my ignorance about the other side of the pipeline was leaving me uninformed about modeling decisions.  I've been going through Wayne's Animation Bootcamp this month, and put together a reel to show you guys.  Special thanks to those of you giving me good feedback along the way (@waylow ssmurfmier1985 phoenix4690 ).

pprocyonlotor Awesome reel John 😄 Your improvement throughout the exercises is very clear. Also I want to applaud your ability to receive feedback and then applying it!!

I especially like Rivets walk cycle and the character ball. Rivets swagger gives him something unique. In the character ball I love how he's rolling hard on the top of that hill to gain speed, that little smoke effect there, gold!! 😃👍🏻 I've been wondering, how did you make that?

Good stuff John, and looking forward to your sculpt January pieces 😊

  • John Sanderson(procyonlotor) replied

ssmurfmier1985 Thanks! The smoke effect is just a simple particle system, using a stretched cube for the particle.  I just fiddled with the emission settings till I got something that suited.

  • smurfmier1985 replied

pprocyonlotor didn't know you could use a particle system for that, nice! Gotta fiddle around with that sometime. Thanks 😊

Haha I got a credit on your reel.

That's nice - but you did the work ;)

    Go, Johnno, Go!

pprocyonlotor great job man. I can't wait to see what you do in 2019, keep at it!

    pprocyonlotor Nice!  Good work there.

pprocyonlotor really great work. You made cool stuff. Nice work on the animation boot camp too. About the sculpting in January. Is that something that returns each year? And how does that work?

  • John Sanderson(procyonlotor) replied

yyukinoh1989 Thanks Yukino.  Yes, Sculpt January happens every year.  I confess I don't know exactly how it works as I have never done it, but here is a link to the contest page where the rules are explained: https://weeklycgchallenge.com/sculptjanuary-2019/

I think Pavel is planning to do it also and maybe a couple others here on the site.  It would be great to have a cookie contingent!

  • yukino hatake(yukinoh1989) replied

pprocyonlotor hmm so later on we know what to sculpt. Not sure if I'll join but if I am allowed i can always try for fun. I can always improve that way. And if it's a topic I don't understand I can always ask help here :).

Of course it depends on when I can go fully dive into blender again and whenever I'll have enough time. Since I made a plan to do next year I might skip it since it takes a full month.

  • silentheart00 replied

pprocyonlotor I'll take a whack at it this time.  Better go practice some sculpting to freshen up lol

  • smurfmier1985 replied

pprocyonlotor silentheart00 Since I'm focused on animation at the moment, I'll be joining the CG Cookie cheering squad. Someone has to stand at the side line clapping and pushing you guys!! 😉

  • silentheart00 replied

ssmurfmier1985 Thanks, Miranda!  I'm cheering for your animation studies!

Happy New Year, everyone!  Here comes the sculpt January... (does anyone else find they spend as much time choosing a subject as they do sculpting?).  Day 1: Deep Sea (sketchfab is here)

  • smurfmier1985 replied

pprocyonlotor Happy new year! Great start, I love the details :)

pprocyonlotor Nice creature.  Happy New Year to you, too!

  • John Sanderson(procyonlotor) replied

Well... I managed to find the uncanny valley if anyone was looking for it.  If the theme for today was "creepy", I could have nailed it.  But I will probably take another stab at "delight" from scratch before the day is over.

    Day 2 Take 2: Delight

Babies aren't my strong suit. I'll just get a cat. Sketchfab here.
