Epic Pumpkin Contest entry (WIP)

Contests and Challenges

Hi, I decided to participate to the pumpkin contest.

I'm not sure yet what I'm gonna as far as concept goes, but I'll probably go for a more "fun-spooky" vibe.

Also I decided to take this challenge as an opportunity to work with Blender 2.8 and get used to it, it's kind of frustrating at times, it's missing lots of features, navigation is awkward and I can't use addons safely. At least getting to work with eevee is a bliss.

Today I just did a pumpkin, a normal regular old pumpkin. Tried to make it look as natural as possible. the interesting stuff will come later.

That is a very nice pumpkin.  You have a great understanding of realism.  Looking forward to the final result!

    Yes,a  very nice one !

Did you sculpt it ? Did you just use procedural materials ?

    Bon boulot :)

Boy, I really left that thread to rot didn't I?

So yeah it's been more than two weeks and I managed to make some progress on this project. The reason why I stopped updating is because for the week after my initial post I had a big art block where I just had o idea what to do, followed by another week of procrastination and being demotivated. Then one day I just stopped thinking and started doodling some stuff at random and came up with something I actually sorta like. so all the stuff I'm going to show is just maybe 4 days worth of work.

In the end I went for a more stylized look, you will also notice I ditched Blender 2.8, it turned out to be too more of a hassle than it's worth. but anyway here's how the thing took shape :

That's a lot of images I hope I'm not breaking a limit or something, but that's my progress, I'm currently attempting to render the final result, I hope it will turn out well, I tried dabbling in volumetric lights but man these are tough to denoise correctly. Well, off to finish this thing.

nabro  the pumpkin was made with curves, all materials are procedural.

Welp, after a long trip down render hell, I guess I'm done.

I did the render in 2.8's cycles. I don't know why but for some reason the colors seems to pop more and the principled volume shader helped to.  I hope you'll enjoy it.
