Problem with Ctrl + Alt

I'm having a problem getting Ctrl + Alt to allow selection of a ring when I click on an edge. I can get what I want by selecting a pair of edges in my target row, and then (Shift + control + Plus key). The selection grows until the entire row is chosen, but I'd like to be able to do this in a single click. Maybe there is something fancy I have to do in Preferences? Not the hardest cross to bear as selecting 'edge ring' works fine, but if this part of my set up is wrong, maybe there is more to worry about?

I have actually discovered an additional related problem with just the Alt key alone, (which of course causes the problem with Ctrl + Alt). I understand that in Edit mode if you click between vertexes with Alt held down, an entire ring is selected. This does not happen for me. The Alt button does work for sure under other circumstances though, e.g. Alt + H to reveal previously hidden objects. No idea why it fails in edit mode like this. Any help appreciated.

the ring has to be made of all quads in blender any triangles or ngons will terminate (not complete) the ring (loop)... this is because blender uses the four "walls" of a quad as NSEW direction to know where the loop goes next...

the next possible problem might be your selecting method... while you are holding alt do you click on a vertex or edge loop? same idea for blender to know which way to go it needs to be on an edge loop to identify which direction to go... a vertex has 2 possible directions...

    hope this helps...

Thanks Mark but this problem shows up with just the starting cube subdivided a few times. Definitely all quads there. I've tried every combination of clicking ctrl and alt plus an edge....no luck.
