(URGENT) It's been MONTHS, and I STILL can't retopologize, or make hands!

The title may seem like i'm joking,  but i'm not. Send help.

It all started in july/august. I had created a few 3d models here and there, following cg cookie courses. The plane, mailbox, wheel, truck, etc. I had gotten excited by my growth and decided to try my hand at something I wanted to do since I downloaded any 3d software: Make a character.

I had sculpted the face and body as well as i could (it was bad however) and moved on to the hands. I am not good at sculpting hands still,  but I continued on, assuring myself that i'd have much more practice after I make more characters after this one (the first stage)

Then, after struggling retopologizing the head and the body, I got to the hands.

I told myself I could do it.

But I couldn't. I really couldn't.

Everything was going horrific.

I couldn't connect/webb the fingers, or attach the fingers to the hand, or create nails.

"It's okay," I told myself. "I'll just practice and in a few days we'll finish this."

hours passed, deleting skin modifier hands in frustration, deleting skin modifier  midway-sculpt hands in frustration, deleting cylinder-sphere  boolean trick hands in frustration, how was I going to make hands if I cant even make the basemesh properly?!?

I grunted and moved on to the retopology stage, creating a cruddy basemesh to the best of my ability and (attempting) to retopologize it.

Days passed. Weeks passed. Months passed, and here I am now. I don't have a single completed hand that I can texture and rig, and my initial project that was supposed to be the *beginning* is sitting in dust.

A few days ago, I almost wanted to cry. How could this happen? Most people only take weeks at most to get the gist of sculpting/retopologizing hands at a beginner level, why has this taken me months?

Then school took it's toll, unforgiving teachers with unforgiving assignments, it was hard enough before in the summer when I was balancing programming/3d modelling, now I was cutting corners for school.

So, I beg for help. I decided to record a video of me trying to make a hand so maybe you could understand my weak points a bit better: https://youtu.be/I1sS8Gr8Eoc

And also, as a suggestion, could CGcookie make a course on sculpting and retopologizing hands, ears and feet? Because from that video, I need any help I can get.

Thanks everyone, advice REALLY appreciated.

Ease down big brother, Leonardo da Vinci started to paint the ‘Last Supper’ in 1495 and finished it in 1498. That is 3 years.

Be careful whom you allow to be your teacher, allow only the best.

I'm by no means an expert so don't take any of my advice to heart but I quickly made a video that might help. Sometimes it helps to see things from another amateur's perspective.

Calm down mate,It's not that much bad that you may thinking.

To be honest, are not you a little bit too over reaction with this.

You did pretty good, but yeah it may not good as you expected but I did say it's still too far from being a failure.

You have some flaws to correct them.

1.Your topology is not quite good (Remember this Fair and square is the key),it seems like you have no idea how the correct is.

-You did better find some of professional works and see his topology.

*Artstation is a good place for finding professional and a good learning place too*

---There is some 3d model which you can view them through Sketchfab or Marmoset Viewer in there too, Hope this help you

2.Your scaling and proportion still not good enough.

-Have a look at your hand and take it as a prototype.

Don't compare yourself with the other by just looking just a glance.

Actually you did better than myself at the first time a lot.

iihatelemons, as others have advised, take it easy! It's going to be okay. Sometimes you do need another way of seeing how to do something. ggeneralshrooms has a nice video, though they started with a mesh and not a skin modifier like you might have. Still, that hand looks very good, so I'd take a look at that video! And also reference hands, even your own! Don't go flying blind with the hand design. Ha ha!

Really, in watching your video and seeing the hand you made, I know that the skin modifier can be troublesome for making small digits like fingers. There are ways to get around the skin modifier issues, but you want to FIRST make sure that the base form of the hand looks the way you want it to look for your character. Don't worry about details until you block in that form.

You rushed yourself, got yourself so worried about making the retopology work, that you didn't give yourself time to fix up the base issues. So just back up, take your time, and there are folks providing some good advice and links! It's okay. :D
