Mirror location

I think the mirror location you mentioned was a little ambiguous. It is not the center of the global coordinate system but the center of the local coordinate system.


If you move the cube to another location (not the global center) and set the origin  of the cube to some point other than the geometric center of the cube then you can add the mirror modifier in object mode and see how it works more clearly.
