So this is a total noob question but my cone appeared on another piece of the map and I can't seem to move/manipulate the 3d space so I can get the cone on top of the sphere. Sometimes I can get it beside it but that's about it...:S Can't seem to get it any closer. how do I manipulate the space and the cone to get it centered on the sphere/tree trunk?

Sound like you may have accidentally moved your 3D cursor off center. In order to reset your 3D cursor back to the 3D viewport's origin, press Shift+S with your cursor in the 3D viewport and select "Cursor to Center".
Of course, no matter where the 3D cursor is, you should still be able to move the cone around in 3D space by dragging the transform manipulators and rotating the 3D camera around.
