Question about reference images

posted to: Scene Preparation

Hi,

In most of the tutorials on CG Cookie, were given reference pictures from multiple views. However, when I try look up references like this for a solo project, its very hard to find to them anywhere.

Am I right to assume that in the video game industry for example, 3D artists are given these kind of references to model from?

Also do you know about some place where it would be possible to get reference like this for modeling practice? Or should I just pick a some concept art that I would like to model and do it only from the "beauty shot"? Or should I first try to sketch these myself and then model from that? I can do some drawing but I am not very good at it, so maybe it would be good practice too. I realize the answer to last two question could be "whatever you prefer",  I am asking more like what would you recommend to someone who recently started with modeling and would one day like to work in the undustry.

Thanks a lot

Tomas

    Hello Tomas,

I'm not Jonathan (I'm a beginner myself) but just asked my friend, he has some experience in gamedev. From his words there are different people responsible for sketching, modeling, rigging and animating in the big companies. Indie can do whatever they have skills/resources for.

Regarding the references or blueprints. You can find some on the websites like this one: https://www.the-blueprints.com . https://www.pinterest.com is also a good place to find images for inspiration or modeling. For instance: https://www.pinterest.ru/pin/230035493445785138/

I think it's worth to be able to draw sketches. This is what I'm going to learn next myself.
