Does it matter if your quads are non-planar?

Awhile back I was trying to do some low poly modeling, and it seemed like a nightmare trying to keep all the quads planar.  I'm guessing that keeping them coplanar is not important when working with subdivisions, is that more or less true?  Or are there still times where keeping everything coplanar is important?

    Hey Jason, it's totally fine if your quads are not completely planar, especially when using subdiv. The only thing to avoid is extreme concave shapes like the image below:
