Why was the inset tool not used?

Question

Is there a particular reason why the inset tool wasn't used for created the inset face instead of Alt S? Or is it not appropriate in this instance?

My memory is fuzzy, but this course was recorded with Blender 2.70 and A) either inset wasn't included yet or B) I was so used to the non-inset way that it was out of habit. But inset is 100% valid in this situation 👌

I am finally getting the courage to finish some courses on my bucket list. I was using inset on this course once I saw Kent doing the helper faces and deleting multiple times I figured out he was just wanting to inset secretly Haha.
