Normal map doesn't show changes in normals.

posted to: Baking a Normal Map

Hello,

when I bake the normal map I just have clear blue and no changes in the normals (picture below). So, also in the viewport I don't see any differences. Does anybody know the reason for this?

(Now, after I tried to bake all the other maps it seems none of these is working. I followed the video and have the same setup, but baking from the high poly does not give me any detail. Hope anybody can help me out with this?)

Regards,

Ricardo

A couple things to double check:

    • Are you using Cycles or Blender Render?
    • Do you have both the source object (hi-poly sculpt) AND the bake-ready object (lo-poly model) selected?

    Thanks for your reply.

I am using Blender Render and yes have both source objects selected (first high-poly than the low-poly stone).

Any ideas what might be going wrong?

Hmm..would you mind uploading your .blend to dropbox or google drive (or other equivalent file hosting service) and provide me a download link? I'd like to open your file and give it a go myself.

So, I tried to bake the normal map again, but still have the same result. Here is the link of my .blend file:  https://www.dropbox.com/s/uroq4176zc69l4l/big_rock_textures.blend?dl=0

I packed the normal map into the .blend file.

I also get an error when baking the normal map: "Circular reference in texture stack". So, I removed the material from the object and then baked it, but as I said I get no normal information.

Thank you very much for having a look!

Odd, I can't get the bake to work either. Really stumps me 🤔

Alternatively, you can bake normals with Cycles. Just hop over to Cycles, add a material to the bake target, add an image texture node, select your bake texture, leave the image texture node selected, and bake your normal map (bake menu in the same spot as blender render.
