Volleyball variation - tricks?

A volleyball is an interesting variation. But is there a practical way to get 3 bars per side? Subdivide always makes a power of 2.

Hey Kevin, good question! There might be a way to do it without modifiers, but here's my first thought on a solution:

Make the loop cuts and insets as a cube and then cast it to a sphere, apply the modifiers, and then make the extrusions.

Perfect, awesome, thanks. I saw Sphere-cast once, never used it, but I sure will from now on.

I saw your answer in email and tried something similar before looking at your picture. I started with cube, subdivide 2 cuts, cast to sphere 1.0, subsurf:2, apply, apply. Then select seam edges, bevel, extrude. (Seams are a little too wide.)

    Nice, that looks great!
