I have used a few other tools to create my entire helmet since the grease cut tool was not working. Should I attempt this exercise with those tools also and see if i can accomplish the task?
Sure knuckelhead. If you can use other tools to accomplish the same/similar workflow, it means you're learning the workflow more than the tools - which is always a good thing.
That said, I still am able to use the Grease Cut tool with 2.79. It will commonly give me some issues but no show stoppers. Sorry to hear you're having such trouble with it.

I also got this problem but increasing the Manhattan and Euclidean distance solved the problem.Hope it helps.
