forearm bone deforms entire mesh

Ok so i followed the video and did what it did step for step. however when i link the armature with automatic weighting and then go to pose mode, when the forearm bone is moved it deforms the entire rig instead of just the end of the bone. i have tried de-linking them multiple times and then re-liinking them but unsure of whats happening.

any idea of what i might have done wrong. im really unsure because i follow the video and it looked really simple. i think it is something to do with the vertex groups made by the automatic weighting since when i switch to bone envelopes in the modifier panel it starts to look a bit more normal.
