BaseMesh - Stylized character

Polybooks

My crazy project, hopefully for no more than a week. I wish to create a stylized swat policeman, following the workflow of https://cgcookie.com/courses/basemesh-create-stylized-characters-quickly-with-blender

I'm really not sure I'll be able to do it, but I know I'll gain some big XP.

Here is the Modified BaseMesh, and the first blockout for the outfit.

I did not expect a swat helmet to be that difficult to model... I also had to blockout a Glock G19 because what is a swat without a stick.

It's a great way to put the knowledge of the course to work. You gain massive XP level up when you make something of your own creativity, because you bump into your own problems that you yourself have to uniquely solve. He has a GI Joe vibe, we'll call him Duke Anton Gabriel, the Swat Special Forces Policemen of the Bureau of Special Forces Intelligence and Protection or BSFIP.

Some advancement on the jacket, and added hair & eyebrow. I love this 3 vertices selection and merge at last to redirect polygon flow! That's great.

You are doing great Laurent! I can see you are focusing on the big shapes first and this is a very important step on the process, of course you can always make adjustment later on, but I think it's a good practice to use as much time as you need to make theses shapes as good as possible.

Keep it up and have a great week!

    Thanks Lucas :)

Everything looks simple to model when I gather my PureRefs but in fact it's quite a challenge.

Here I refined the helmet, which is a key element in the outfit. I also worked on the elbow brace.

Work fast? Wow I feel like taking forever!

I was working on the Glock and having a hard time. I'll have to revisit https://cgcookie.com/courses/modeling-weapons-for-a-first-person-shooter

I had to clean the mess on the hand gun, which took the time I would needed to redo it from scratch. Added Scarf & did the first pass on clothes folds. I also folded the shirt lowerarm (it ads a touch of virility :'D )

It's amazing how Lucas keep control on the topology all along, I really envy this skill! :)

Duke Anton? who's that? I googled and found a WoW Npc, a LoL champion or an Austrian noble ^^

I'm fighting against the Glock, I guess I'll need the whole day to tame it... Even if it's totally outside the scope of the course. But I really need it for my plan on the final render, It's the second main actor...

Hard surface modelling is challenging in that it suffers no approximation any crap you do destroys the whole effect. And there is no way to hide.

More details & I had to rectify the weird V-shape of the canon, thankfully the mesh is at a manageable polycount. On the mandatory details I still have the magazine to add, and if I'm not dead, some decals :)

That is looking great and again, you work super fast. It's not a competition but if it was a competition you would win first place. You're the next Usain Bolt of 3D modeling.
