Mirroring not working?

Hi, when I weightpaint the neck part of the helmet, X-mirroring doesn't work, even if I have it turned on. Why is that?

The tutorial only uses the gradient tool, but I tried to adjust a bit with the brush and noticed that it doesn't reflect on the opposite side.

    HI Markus,

It seems that the mesh is slightly out of symmetry so Blender doesn't recognise it as symmetrical.

You can add a mirror modifier to the top of the stack, bisect it on the x axis and then apply.
That is probably the easiest way to fix that asymmetry issue.

    Hope that helps.

Thanks. I'm just curious how it works since I'm trying to learn as much as possible! The armor has some asymmetry as well, but symmetrical painting still works. That's why I thought it would still work on slightly asymmetrical meshes.

Anyways, I think I'm done with this project and ready to submit my result! Thanks for a great course!!
