General Speed and Timing

I was noticing while I was creating this character ball animation, that I seem to default to creating slower paced animations compared to the little example you created. Would you recommend that I take some time to focus on creating animations that are quicker and take up half the time? I feel I could be building a bad visual and mental habit here.

Perhaps in later lessons we'll get to that kind of thinking as well.

The answer is yes you should spend a little time focused on animating in a way that feels right to you. If you feel it's slower then speed it up. Just remember that it doesn't have to be exactly the same. Nor should it be. With that said, you may want to go back to chapter 2 and rewatch Timing and Spacing along with Developing your Eye. Personally I like to work in seconds rather than frames. To do this with mouse cursor over the Timeline/Dopesheet/Graph editor press ctrl+t or click view menu and check Show Seconds. I find this easier.

I don't know if you mean that Wayne works fast and you feel you're slower compared to him, or that your animation end result feels slow. But I think you feel Wayne works fast is because, of course, he has a lot of experience. Plus on a video recording you have time to rehearse and edit stuff out. But if you mean your animation end result, then it doesn't matter if it's slow or fast, it depends on what you're aiming for, if slow paced is your style and it works, feels cool and appealing, then it's all good. And if you want to focus on creating faster ones, to change styles, it's cool also.

    Hi Brandon,
Every animator has a tendency to either go under or over in their first passes at things.
I would say that most animators tend to go under (myself included) and then are constantly told to push it further (ie - bigger, faster, more extreme etc).
Some animators are told to bring it back a little, but they are far fewer in number.
The second one is better imo as the seem not to be afraid to take bigger risks and create more exiting results.

But you need not worry too much.  The fact that you have noticed your tendency is a sign that you have good metacognition and can work on moving towards what you want to achieve.

This art form is a journey.  You never get to the end, but you are always getting closer (hopefully haha)
