Adding notes to objects in the outliner

I don't know how necessary this is, or if this is something that could be used in a workflow, but I did want to ask.

@15:38ish, Jonathan is talking about putting backup copies of the body object into the recycle folder - as well as making incremented saves for important steps - All important notes I've taken down to save my skin when making a big boo-boo.

My thought is, and again, let me know if this might not actually be as helpful as I think it could be - but If I were to put a backup object, or even a variation of an object into a recycle folder is it possible somehow to add notes to the object in the outliner (this doesn't need to be for backups, It could even be for objects I might be currently using)?

I can rename it with a specific object name, but what if I needed to add a lengthy description of what this currently used, backup, or variation of an object is, or what its purpose is? It appears that the text box for object names in the outliner has a max number of 63ish characters.

When hovering over any tool, it pops up with a description for what it does. EG: Scale has a popup that states "Scale (resize) selected items".

Long story short, and I might be getting too far down in the weeds, but I was wondering if there's any way to create notes that could be read by right clicking on the object in the outliner, or adding a popup script of information when hovering over it?

Again, do let me know if I'm being overly inquisitive 🤘🤠🤘

A better example of how I think this could actually be helpful is if I were to send the blender.file to someone else to work on. If they could go to the object outliner and find notes or descriptions on objects (again, backups, variations etc), it would save a bit of head scratching on their end.

    Cheers!

That is not directly possible in Blender.

What some people do, is to simply make a Text File (with the Text Editor, for instance) with notes (and Save the .blend, with the Text Editor open). This always looks really efficient and useful to me, both for yourself, as for others, if you share the .blend file. This can also be helpful in pointing out differences between Incremental Saves, for instance.

There is an addon, but it hasn't been updated in a few years so some of it's features may not work, but the ability to add notes to objects and scenes still works. It's called noter. The original is here https://github.com/rovh/Noter

It was updated for 3.3 here: https://www.gs614.ca/Noter/

That's the way I would do it, just name the object in the Outliner "A3" for example and in the text editor write "A3: This is the piece that was giving me a lot of trouble and made me wish I had studied to be a chef instead, but I will save it in the recycle bin for later when I'm more comfortable with modeling".
