Problem with the texture brush

posted to: Brush Textures

I work with Blender 4.0 with Mac. I have some questions about brushes textures. First: I try to download a texture from Polyhaven but I don't know really how because it hasn't worked. What I got is a .blend file (what do I do with it?) and four elements: 2 jpgs, 1 png and 1 exr. Which one should I choose? I chose one jpg but without success...

Also, I would like to know if we can use your own pictures for texturing and if so, what are your recommendations?

Thanks!

(I tried to link a screenshot of my computer but your system asks an image URL...)

I'm not sure exactly what you mean. You can download any JPG image and use it as a texture for a brush, including your own pictures yes. Can you show us your process, to see exactly what you are doing so we can help up. You should be able to attach an image now, it's a bug that doesn't allow you to post one in the first post.

    Here's a screenshot (it works now!). 3-12 à 14.15.08.png

Great. What did you do differently that you got it working? Also that is some trippy Blender UI you got there.

  • Marie Delagrave(delama) replied

What worked is the uploading of the screenshot, not the brush texture, sorry!!! In fact, I don't know what I do wrong with the texture...

And what do you mean by «trippy Blender UI»? It's in French (because I am a French Canadian and I insist, even it's often more difficult, to use softwares in French).

    HI Marie,

Make sure the texture is selected (under Texture), it probably is...

Maybe try changing the Brush Stroke Method (Trait) to better see what's happening. (Drag Dot is good for testing)

Also, that image doesn't have a lot of contrast...maybe use a greyscale image..the Displacement Texture might be good for Sculpting..

  • Marie Delagrave(delama) replied

Well, well, well.. I checked the Texture selection, changed the brush stoke to drag dot and tried a new image of Poly Haven (by the way: which one should I choose? I took the grayscale one.) But still no effect on my object.

Check that your mesh is dense enough. You need a lot of geometry for the vertices to get displaced by the texture. So subdivide it a lot or use a Multires modifier.
  • Marie Delagrave(delama) replied

You are right: the mesh wasn't dense enough! Now, I can see something, even if it is not exactly what I expected. The most important is that understand more how it works. However, the instructor should have specified that in the course about Fundamentals of Digital Sculpting... 😉

    Thanks Omar.
