Chap. 5 Using Hot Key F9 - or Shift Ctrl Z, Doesn't Work with 4.0!

Time 6;47 - After selecting a plane, I find my mmb works to magnify the plane, but it doesn't actually enlarge or change its size. I attempted this because F9 is not active. There is no redo panel either, or I can't see it at lower left bottom of screen. When I go to Edit, scroll down , I do not see F9 only see an inactive Shift Crtl Z which neither of them work. What am I missing? I do remember I was never able to get F9 or F2 to work several years ago when I was using 3.1 - Please explain.

Oh.....I remember! the redo Plane only appears right after you add an object, but as soon as you click on the screen , the redo panel disappears. However...  pressing Shift Ctrl Z at same time brings up  four ways to view object: wire, solid, material, rendered.  But  does not activate hot key F9 to change size!  has this changed within 4.0?

Regarding my original post:  Since the F9 disappears once I touch something else on the page or window.... if I do needed to change the properties later, I can always use the Tool Bar or go to Object  Properties and use the transform section! However, the F9 and/or F2 key doesn't works. Is there a reason?

ONE LAST Observation: I just found my mistake. I have been pressing the F key, then the 7 key..... I didn't see the 'F9' and F2' keys on the top of the keyboard.. The keyboard has a shadow casting  over the F key  section......so sorry everyone.
