Nooby Question on Mouse Navigation

Question Modeling

Hi,

Is it normal when I'm in the top view (NumPad 7) where when scrolling up (or away from the object) it moves away in the up direction in the Z and and down in the Y axis at the same time, opposite going down (or towards the object). Shouldn't the scrolling in the top view in Orthographic view be straight up and down in the Z axis?

I fiddled with the preferences but can't seem to get the right combination to have is move in the direction of the axis when just scrolling. Or am I dreaming? lol

If it is possible can you show me your preference settings?

Yeah, I can use ctrl+mouse button and drag but that also moves me in a weird angle, not in the axis direction.

That is a fun approach, never thought about it that way. I see what you mean lol.

That would be the intuitive way when you think about that's how we scroll websites all the time or word documents. That is such an unique perspective, that never crossed my mind. I love it. I guess it's just getting used to how that behaves in the 3D world. Being in the top view looking down and you scroll up on your mouse, is like grabbing the stick in the pilot seat of a jet plane and pushing it forward, that will make the plane go down in a nose dive. That's why you would see the cube in the 3D viewport coming towards you as you go down in your jet plane.

    Hi Omar,

Thanks for replying. It was working that way but all of the sudden it was working really wonky. I shutdown for awhile and started back up and now it works correctly moving in the axis direction when I scroll in the top, bottom, side orthographic views and also with ctrl+mouse wheel and dragging. For some reason moving became backwards and erratic and at times  I was being catapulted into weird far off distances and I couldn't move or get back to the objects with Home or the numpad period. I thought I was loosing my mind or suffering from the Mandela effect. Maybe both? 8^) hehe

    Hey Brad,

By default, Blender uses the center of the 3D Viewport for zooming. If you zoom out (objects getting smaller), everything moves towards the center. Pressing the Home key, centers your Objects and then zooming works as you expect (only in Z-Axis, when in Top View).

You can also set Blender to use your mouse position as reference point for zooming: Preferences > Navigation > Zoom > Zoom to Mouse Position.

    Hi Martin,

Yeah, normally it works that way but for some reason the navigating has become ridiculously impossible. There is something really wrong with the navigating. It's very jerky, doesn't center on anything, very hard to control the direction you want to go if you press Home or the NumPad period key. The ctrl+mouse wheel drag shifts of to the side and doesn't zoom straight in like it use to. Somethings really off, it wasn't this difficult before It ise to be fairly smooth but something has changed. It often sends me catapulted way out in space and hitting Home at least points me back to the object but miles away, lol. This is crazy.

I'm using version 3.3.1. Is there issues with this version by any chance?

  • Martin Bergwerf replied

    Hi Brad,

I don't know, but there are some fixes (mostly in 3.3.2), that might be related your problem. I'd recommend you upgrade to the latest corrective release (3.3.6 LTS) and see if that helps.

Also make sure that your drivers are up to date.

    Thanks Martin,

It was working okay then all of the sudden it's hard to control. Very weird. I have downloaded 3.5 and has the same problem. I'm thinking it's due to the size of the model. I'm finishing, or trying to finish the Gameboy model from the press start course. and navigating is so awkward and any movement is big and overshoots, I can't zoom into anything and the NumPad period shoots off into space instead of the object (like a vertice) . I think this is the smallest model I've worked on and can explain why as I never had this before

Good idea about the drivers. I need to get a driver updater. Any recommendations? LOl, I was going to look into my Logitect mouse drivers and the G Hub program won't open for some reason. Haha, Ay yi yi.

  • Martin Bergwerf replied

    Hey Brian,

If, like you say, the Numpad also behaves weird, you might wanna look especially to the GPU driver(s).

I don't have any experience with driver updaters, I am using Linux, which, nowadays handles updates a bit better than Windows

(And, I can recommend disabling GPU Subdivision in your Preferences > Viewport > Subdivision...although that shouldn't make a difference in this case, as this model doesn't use any Subdivision Surface Modifier (if I'm not mistaken), but can cause weird glitches in other situations, when you do use a Subsurf Modifier...)

    Thanks Martin,

I tried scaling up the model and kept tweeking the preferences navigation and it seems a little more stable. But when I finished some fixes the model geometry blew apart, lol.

I deleted it and am attempting to just work on the model as is and see if the tweeks I did had anything to do with it.

Would you mind sending a snapshot of your navigation preferences? I just want to see and compare. I've tried different combinations of settings.

It's weird, the panning in 3D seems to center around the cursor not the object highlights. The panning also moves in just the X, Y axis so you can't move in the direction your looking. And trying to get close enough to see something is nexty t impossible, it shhots you off into space if you get close, it's very weird.I have moved the cursor and that helps a bit in getting close but still very awkward

  • Martin Bergwerf replied

    Hi Brad,

my settings are pretty much like default; I think I only changed the Zoom to Mouse Position:

Stupid question, is your model in, or close to the center of the world? If it is very far off, that can cause really weird behavior and glitches.

    Great thanks.

I ticked the Orbit Around Selection and use Dolly for panning.

The model is dead center world but the panning in 3D seems to be centered around the 3D cursor. If I move it it will better move around it but not perfectly. My service warranty ended for my computer recently so I found their driver updater had not been very good at catching all the drivers and am installing some now and will see how that goeds. But it is stabilizing a little more using the cursor and cutting down on the mouse sensitivity, too much crying going on here. 8&)

Now that I read more about it, the 3D view for me gets wonky when two things happen, the model I'm focusing on is very small or my pivot point is set to the 3D cursor and I have the wrong thing selected. If you open a totally new Blender scene and you navigate around the default cube, does the weird navigation behavior persists?

  • Brad Wheeler(brad-nbo) replied

    Hi Omar,

I opened a new file, duplicated the cube several times, changed the cursor to one of the cubes. Zoomed way out and out of view (I had selected a cube far from the cursor) hit NumPad period and it zoomed to the selected cube, not to the cursor.

My model was working correctly that way but suddenly started navigating in a bizarre way. It will always zoom to the cursor and not selected, for one of the issues. I don't know what setting would bring it back to zoom in on the selected rather than cursor.. It also pans along the X Y grids or panning towards the cursor and not in the direction your viewing. The cursor is like a magnet, there must be a setting somewhere, lol.

    Thanks for any help

  • Omar Domenech replied

Ooohhh I think I might know what is going on. In the N Panel, see if you accidentally lock some object to the view or lock to the 3D cursor.
