Pink Object in Texture Paint blender 3.0

The first round of texture painting went well but on switching to the next object with a different material, I found the "use nodes" button seemed to be acting strangely and now I can't get the node to show on any new materials in solid mode.  lookdev mode is fine.  (the "base metal" material is still acting normally.) and in texture paint one object that has the new material (inner head) is pink but the rest of the objects with the same material are just grey.

For a while before this the checkers texture wouldn't relinquish it's hold on my other materials even after disconnecting and then deleting them.

Also your tutorials are killer man.  great work :)

Hey, glad you're enjoying the course! A pink texture indicates that there's a missing or not loading texture, so somewhere in that material must be an image texture node with either nothing selected or a broken path. More on that in this lesson: Managing Texture Data - CG Cookie

I'm not sure how two objects would appear as different colors if they have the same material... that seems impossible. If the above doesn't fix it then try going to File -> External Data -> Pack Resources, saving, and sending me the file to investigate.

Brilliant, that pointed me in the right direction.  I had to take a few days off and when I came back to it, I seem to have forgotten a hot key that I believe you used in texture paint mode that allowed you to mask a portion of the selected object by selecting faces...  I thought it was alt left click but that doesn't seem to do it.  am I crazy or do you know what I'm talking about?

(edit: found it, I didn't have that face select mode enabled)
