Trouble with scaling top of chest

I’m having a strange scaling result. Whenever I select everything, extrude then right click to cancel transformation, Alt + S to scale, and it does scale, but it looks like its extruding from the top and bottom no matter which direction I decide to scale. It also doesn’t scale the sides of the chest inward. The only thing I can really see being the problem is whenever I got a little bit ahead of the video, I ended up separating the top faces of the chest and didn’t know I wasn’t supposed to do that, so I merged by distance and left the sides separated. I honestly have no clue!

I’m a beginner, so I’m sure there’s a super simple solution or I just missed something!

I couldn't upload an image for some reason, so heres  a link to it: https://www.dropbox.com/s/wrn8oaclpwnzqyo/Trouble%20scaling%20top%20of%20chest.jpg?dl=0

There is probably some double geometry left (if you have two Faces on top of eachother and then try to ALT+S scale one, it can only go in one direction, if that makes sense).

Select all (with A) then M > Merge by Distance. Just to be sure, also (with everything selected) SHIFT+N to re-calculate the Normals.

(By the way, those are the top two problem solvers, that will solve a lot of your modeling issues.)

Now it should work as expected (you might need to seperate some pieces, I honestly can't remember, because the whole top is one piece now).

It worked perfectly! Thank you very much!
