Feedback and tipps for my bust

Hey,

right now I'm working on a bust (as some of you know) and I'm stuck again :(
So, here is the bust:

Problem areas in my opinion are the eyes and the ears.
If you'd like to help me out, I can provide a download link to the .blend file.

Regards,
tobles

Hey ttobles , your doing a pretty good job so far.

I have to admit I'm not a master sculptor like @theluthier , but are you using any reference images or concept art?

Firstly the ears, these are unique ears, these will be entirely down to you and your character. Although I would say the ear lobe and the lower edge look a little thin.

The eyes, I would suggest study some eyes in reference images and include in that study the eyebrows, the cheek bone. Notice on a male the eyebrows (the hairy part) is not what is defined, its actually the shape of the skull. The eyelids should be a little more fleshed out.

The cheeks under the eyes look like he should have a big smile, the flesh pushed up and out.

If you see a friend you have known for a long time one day, and they have a full head of hair, and then you see them the next day and they have removed every hair on their head, they look odd, features look out of proportion. The point being, things may not look entirely perfect until you put some hair on it, try not to over critique yourself, just keep improving it based on feedback and reference images, and at some point you will have to move on from trying to create perfection.

For future projects, I would suggest, as Kent would probably agree, starting with a skull shape for either male or female and adding muscle definition and skin detail on to the skull shape, and use lots of reference.

I hope this helps, don't be discouraged with your work, asking and receiving feedback is a big step forward on the learning curve.

I can't wait for Kent's new sculpting course coming soon, I really need to up my game with sculpting.

    Wow @adrian2301,

that's a massive feedback and it's helpful. Thanks a lot.

...but are you using any reference images or concept art?

Yes, I'm using reference images. I'm looking at a lot of pictures of orcs from Lord of the Rings, since they assemble the look I am going for.

Firstly the ears, these are unique ears, ...

The ears aren't as unique as one might think, I guess :D

For the interior of the ear, I also looked at thesculptress Orc Ear Study and tried to get some information for me.

Although I would say the ear lobe and the lower edge look a little thin.

For the ear lobe and the lower edge, I will fiddle around a little to see if I can improve the overall look by making it thicker, thanks for this suggestion.

The eyes, I would suggest study some eyes in reference images and include in that study the eyebrows, the cheek bone. Notice on a male the eyebrows (the hairy part) is not what is defined, its actually the shape of the skull. The eyelids should be a little more fleshed out.

Your suggestion for the eyes are very helpful. I'll try to make them more fleshy and also sketch some eyebrows to see if this forwards me.

The point being, things may not look entirely perfect until you put some hair on it,

Hair seems to be a little problem right here. I was thinking of a nearly bald look (like the orc in the picture), but I'll go and put some hair on him to check if the overall look is consistent.

This really helped me a lot Adrian, feels like I can't say thank you often enough.
I'm also very excited about his new course, can't wait :D

So, here I am back again. At this point I've thickened the eyelids a little, added some folds and for the overall impression I put some color on it as well as some (strange) hair. Any thoughts?

I'm happy for every comment or tipp you can give me to improve this bust (but only the head part). In case this helps, right now I'm aiming for a bust that looks believable.
