I modeled a long branch using the skin modifier, and added leafs to it using a particle system. Then applied the particle system, and joined the leaf-objects with the branch.
Then I created some curves by following the edges of the Suzanne mesh in a random fashion. Each curve was then followed by a duplicate of my branch using the curve modifier.
Then added some more leaf volume simply by using a particle system on the original Suzanne object(as emitter) and my leaf-object as hair strand.
