Final Color, Highlights, and Shadows

Coloring Melvin's Arm

  All right, so that's coloring my arm. Turn it back on. Turn everything else off. I'll do this on a new layer, so let's call it fillings. Let's use our paint bucket tool to fill it in. I'm going to start with the dark color, so fill area skin dark. Click. Click. Click. Click. Oh, and it's above so I need to make sure that this is below, so it's going to draw in the correct order. Now I'm going to fill in the skin base. This is going to be a little bit more difficult. Let's try, I'll try and do the long area first. Let's go skin base and with my imaginary boundary line I'm going to hold down ALT and contain our fill in here. That has worked, excellent. 

Creating a Temporary Layer

                    I want to do a similar thing with our object here, but all these lines are in our way. I'm going to create a temporary layer, call it temp. Let's hide this for now. I'm just going to draw an imaginary line here. I don't need it to be perfect because I'm going to, oops, I'm going to clean it up in a moment. I'm just going to draw a boundary and then hide everything else. All right, hide my arms. You probably you can't see that very well. Let me turn on my thing ... with this option here, before you're filling in you can actually see where it's going to paint. Which is sometimes quite handing for these situations. 

Cleaning Up Boundary Stroke

                    Let me click in there, it's done a pretty good job. I'm going to turn that off. I am finished with my imaginary boundary stroke, so let's clean that up. Clean up, remove boundary strokes. I'm going to turn my arms back on, and then I've got to sculpt it into a position that I want. Let's go to sculpt. That's what I want. I kind of want it to pivot around the same spot but this can't, I don't want it to swing out over here. I think this will be good enough.

Merging Down, Cleaning Up

                    I'm ready to merge these down. That was my temp layer. Merge down. Oh, and you notice one thing, now my dark lines have disappeared. You might be tempted to go and paint them in again, but if we jump into edit mode you can see that ... here, I'll just select everything. Edit mode. Oh, make sure I choose my fills. Edit mode. You can see that they're actually still there. What we can do, just select our object here, and I can go W and I can arrange the strokes. I can send this one behind the other one. Just go send to back and now you see, ah, they're all visible again. 

                    While I'm here I can see I've got quite a lot of density. I'm just going to simplify that. Let's try one more time. Yup, that's good, it's just giving me less points to work with, which is perfect. 

                    Okay, so we're finished with our base colors, which is really good. I think I can combine some of my layers now. I want to combine my lines with my fills because everything else I'm going to do is on a separate layer. It would be pretty easy for me just to merge our body lines down to the body fills. I'm just going to call that body, so that's good. Now, if we merge our arm lines down, I want this back section to be behind the other one. Let's merge it down and move it manually. Call this arms, or actually it's just going to be one arm, one singular arm. I'm going to select these objects. Let's clean up the strokes, clean up my boundary strokes. That got rid of any points that we don't need. Let's simplify this a little bit, just for my brain. 

                    I'm just selecting one point and then hitting L to make sure that they're all selected. Then, I'm going to move this with the W, arrange, send to back. Now, I'm jumping to draw mode. You can see our arm is showing in the right order. Excellent. 

Adding Melvin's Eyes

                    All right, let's add eyes to our character. I'll do this on a new layer. I'm going to call it eyes. Whoops-a-daisy. Call it eyes. Make sure this is above everything else, and I'm going to choose our circle tool and make sure that we're drawing with our eye black. Since yesterday, I actually started recording this tutorial yesterday, and then today they've actually added some more cool grease pencil features. It's actually easier to use the circle tool, and they've even added a curve tool. Which I won't explain in this tutorial, but I'll show you how the circle tool works. 

                    I'm on my eyes later, I've got my circle tool, and I have my eye black. I'm just going to drag it here, and you can see that I've got these little cool things. This one will effect it from the bottom right and this one will be for the top left. Here is our center point. I want to create an eyeball just by dragging it to be the shape that I want. Then, I'm going to hit enter to confirm. Now, this has turned into a grease pencil object. I'm going to add our speck here, just a little shiny part of the eyeball. We're going to do the same, a little bit oval shaped. Let's hit enter to confirm that one. Don't know why I had to hit it twice but I did. Now, let's just copy that over. Edit mode, select these two guys, shifty. Put it about there. I'm just going to scale this up just a tiny bit. Scale, just a little bit, and then make sure that our eyes kind of feel like they're in line. 

Jumping to Draw Mode

                    Let's go to draw mode to kind of give a sense of ... a little bit wider. Let's go edit mode, move this a little bit over this way. Then, select all these guys and move them a little bit wider. I'm going to make this a tiny little bit smaller. Okay. I'm happy with that. That's our eyeballs. All right, so let's add some shadow to this character to give him some type of depth, rather than him being just a flat character. 

Adding a Shadow to our Character

                    I'm going to do that by adding a new layer. Let's call this body shadow. I'll also have an arm shadow. The reason I want to separate that is because our arm is going to be animated. All right, so on this body shadow I'm going to go back to draw mode and I'm going to grab my pen here. I'm just going to show you what I'm going to do, and then I'm going to speed it up so you can see. On my layer here, body shadow, I'm going to choose my shadow, my skin shadow is a material that I've created here. That's just kind of got a little bit of a ... the alpha is down to 50% and it's yeah, just a black but 50% opacity.

                    Now, let me kind of just draw a shadow. I'm just going to draw it rough now, and just to a shape like this. Okay, so now with this shape, there's an option up here called clamp. When I hit that, it's only going to effect the part of the object where there is something behind it in one of these layers. If there's an alpha, it will only show where there is alpha behind it. It is very, very handy. I can also change the opacity of this layer, so this is how I'm going to change and adjust the shading that I want. This is what I'm going to do, and I'm going to speed it up just so, I'm going to add a shadow to all the areas that I want. All right, now let me undo that and I'm going to do it for real. All right. Fast forward. 

Still Looking Rough, but not for Long

                    It's going to look a little bit rough at the moment. It's going to look quite dark and quite ugly, but remember just in a few minutes I'm going to try and clean it up for you. Yeah, that fill tool, it's a little bit cumbersome to use. So good luck for you guys, but you'll kind of get the hang of where it falls short. Now, when you're sculpting it I just care about the inside, I don't care about the overhang because it's not going to be a problem for us. I'm nearly happy with everything here, just giving everything a smooth. I think that's it. 

Shadow Added!

                    All right, and we're going to jump back to normal speed now and I'm going to show you when I click clamp button, it's going to look a lot better. There we go. Let's just change the opacity here, let's just bring it down to about ... let's go about 40%. Point four, maybe a little bit less, point three. There we go, so we've added a little bit of shadow to our character here. 

Adding a Highlight to our Character

                    Now, I'm going to do a similar thing but I'm going to add a tiny little bit of highlight. Let's add a new layer. Let's do it here. Bang. Whoops. I've moved them. I wanted to add them. Body highlight. Let's do the same thing, I will probably do this in fast forward as well. Choosing my skin shadow, skin highlight. What I'm trying to do now is just create a little bit of a highlight in the areas that I want to accentuate. I'll come back and I will tweak these in a little bit, so don't worry about the color for now because I'm going to do the same trick and then lower the opacity.

Fast Forward: and the Famous Background Music

                    Now we're back into fast forward mode. I don't really think I need to narrate this, because I'm just doing exactly the same thing. What about a little bit of background music ... I wish I knew the words to this song ... You don't have to pay royalties when you make the music with your mouth ... I'm going to quit 3D and become a math musician you see. Yeah, sorry about that. 

Normal Speed: Character Finished!

                    All right, now we're back to normal speed. I'm going to drop this opacity down to 30% as well. Is that what I had the other one on? Yeah, 30%. Okay. We can turn everything back on now. All right, that's our finished 2D character. Actually, what's going on here, I'm just going to jump into edit mode for our body highlight. Ah yeah, somethings going on here. Let's just see what I can do to fix that. I'm going to delete that and redraw. Whoops, I've used the wrong material there, but I can fix that by going to edit, link select, and then go assign material. Skin highlight. Skin highlight, there we go. While I'm here one final tweak that I'm going to do, I think these highlights look just a little bit too bright, so I'm going to change the opacity, or the alpha of our fill here. 

                    I'm going to lower it down to something like that, so let's go 40%. Yup, okay, I'm liking that a lot better. Cool, so our 2D character is finished. Let's see what we can do about animating the arm.
