Control global z-depth of sharp crease brush?

If I'm sculping a bug, and I'm dividing its plates/segments with the sharp draw tool, don't want the sharp draw brush to perpetually dig deeper and deeper into the mesh. I want it to a single height, so matter how I overlap the segments, the depth of the crevice between plates stays the same.

Do I have to do some kind of fancy masking/annotating technique to achieve this, or is there a simpler way to limit the global depth of the sharp draw brush?
