A quick fix for selecting those first patches: in my case, everything BUT those patches I wanted got selected. If that's the case, don't forget to use CTRL+I to quickly invert your selection, so you reach your desired patches. I don't know why this happened in my case, but I get a feeling, I might not be the only one.
