Price Change, Simplifying the Membership

Recently we launched a brand new version of CG Cookie with the goal to provide an engaging platform and experience for you to be a part of while learning to become a freelancer, getting a job in the industry or simply having a blast at your hobby.

Our mission is to go beyond being a training site.

Yes, your citizen subscription allows you to access hundreds of videos, arguably more hours than lecture hours of a $90k art degree, but that’s only the beginning. Going beyond video education, CG Cookie is a wealth of resources: engage with us and industry professionals through live events, challenge your skills with an exercise, gain critical feedback on your work in the gallery, monitor your personal roadmapand more.

We’re constantly trying to make your experience better and to do more to enable you. A side effect of this, unfortunately, is the need to revisit our pricing each year or so. It’s that time again.

After all of our research and testing we’ve landed on an updated pricing model that offers flexible payment terms with a straight forward offering.

Simplifying the Membership

Previously we offered two different monthly options, with and without downloads. This was intended to give more flexibility but in reality it just complicated our pricing for customers while adding complexity to the site. Not many people really understood the difference between “Citizen” and “Citizen Pro”, or “Basic” and “Pro”. We’ve decided to go back to basics. One plan, three different payment term options. What you see is what you get.

The new plans are slightly more expensive than their previous equivalents, $2 increase on Pro Monthly for example. This is necessary for the continued long-term health of CG Cookie.

If you're currently on the $21/mo Citizen Basic you continue to enjoy the lower monthly rate. If you'd like to add downloads, partner discounts and live event critiques you would need to update to the $29/mo Citizen Monthly, your first month will be prorated if you upgrade.

When is this happening?

The price change will take effect on November 14th, 2017.

If you have an active subscription then don’t fret. Your price will never change so long as your subscription is active. You’ll only pay the new price if you choose to cancel and then come back.

I imagine you have some questions, please post them below or email us. Additionally, I will be hosting a Live Event on Nov 15th @5pm covering Learning with CG Cookie.

Thanks for supporting the Cookie. 🍪

I agree with the changes, this way it's simpler and I also think the prices are fair considering the (amazing) quality of the content. The only critique/suggestion/personal opinion I have is that, I find this happening to me:

I subscribe, I burn through all the content I'm interested in, and then I find myself not keeping the subscription simply because I watched everything I needed to, until enough content is released to keep me busy for another month. Subscribing gives you access to other perks of course like critiques etc. that are extremely good and I think you guys should focus on those perks especially and adding even more "live"/personal stuff to keep subscriptions going on, absolutely! That is what makes subscribing to you really, really useful.

But on the other hand I think some extra love could be given to those guys like me (but probably many others too) that for one reason or another are on the lookout for lessons only. For example, I wouldn't mind paying x dollars for a single course, every time one I like is released, or updated to a significant new version.

Anyways, pretty long comment sorry, but still want to make clear that I think you guys are doing an excellent job and there would be nothing wrong in giving priority to what is most convenient financially for you and disregarding what isn't, as most of us probably know that you can't pay rent or food just with good will, unfortunately :)

Cheers, and I hope many more will join the family, I for one will come back very soon!

tthelexx you're on an old monthly plan and have always had video download access. The way videos are downloaded changed in SIX. Here's the support guide on how to download videos:

The archive is slowly being republished on YouTube via our CG Cookie Classics:

  • Alexander Rulezovsky (lolomancer)

    What is "perks"?

  • John Crawford (vaculik)

jonathanwilliamson What I mean to ask is, do I get to download the videos while paying $21 a month? Or do I need to start paying $29 for those perks?

siranoobis thanks Marco! The Live Events are a major focus of ours right now. It really helps to bring focus to topics that're difficult to do well in course format, while also helping to build more personal relationships with each of you.

We're going to be doing a lot of them!

So far as purchasing individual courses, we actually tried this a few years ago. In short, it failed miserably. Each course would get released as a Shop Product, enabling one-off purchases, but they'd only ever sell a couple times; not even enough to pay for the publishing time.

However, we are starting to experiment with this again via the Blender Market. We've so far released one course for sale on the market:

lolomancer Partner discounts! You can find them here:

vvaculik you'd need to upgrade to the $29. You can do that anytime starting November 14th, or I can do it for you today if you're wanting to. Just let me know!

  • John Crawford (vaculik)

tthelexx I'm not asking how to download them, I'm asking if I'll be able to on a monthly subscription still running at $21 p/m.

  • Julián (skiress)

I planning to subscribe for another month in december. If I buy now a 30 days gift card for myself will the code still be available in a month?

  • crew
    Jonathan Williamson (jonathanwilliamson)

sskiress yep! The code will be valid indefinitely.

  • ashasekayi

Thanks for the grandfathered pricing! It's nice to see a company show appreciation for the people that supported them in the beginning.

  • thelexx

    You rock, many thanks !

  • John Crawford (vaculik)

    I like siranoobis suggestions.
I also think Wayne Dyxon waylow has the right idea by having a ton of exercises in his courses, and he gives really thoughtful & detailed feedback on everyone's work.

  • J Mundati (jei)

hey, so now one access his or her account even without a subscription?

  • d401tq

I would like to echo the sentiments of some other people: this price is a good price if you are new to CGC, as you get immediate access to a huge amount of content. However, if you are a long-term member this does not represent good value for money: again, as others have noted, 1 Blender course per 1/2 months translates to $29-58 for a single course. Even with a yearly subscription it is $23-46 per course. I am sure if it was framed this way, there would be many fewer subscribers.

  • crew
    Jonathan Williamson (jonathanwilliamson)

dd401tq if you compare that to the cost of many other courses on other platforms then you'll find that it's actually quite reasonable. Take for example these courses: they are commonly ini the $40-50 range.

However, to equate the pricing strictly with the course offering does a disservice to what CG Cookie really is. We're trying to do much more than just release courses on a regular basis.

The Learning Flows alone offer complete curriculums for learning entire subjects. The Live Events give you an opportunity to engage directly with instructors and ask the difficult questions, while also learning techniques that're difficult to present in course form.

And that's not counting the Resources or Perks.

Also keep in mind that you're not just paying for those courses that're released during the term of your subscription. You're paying for access to the entire library of over 100+ courses, 50+ tutorials, and 9 learning flows.

Now i have to say that true that i agree a price change is sometimes needed but in this case its making me iffy for new people such as myself, 21$ was perfect for someone like me who wanted to get some descent quality videos but if i had seen it was nearly 30$ i might not have touched this site.
Now your videos are good in some aspects but when it comes down to someone such as myself i love to know what everything does and most of the tuts ive done so far barely explain or just skip over most of the time what something does and just shows you what to do, ive had found myself more then once going to YouTube to just understand something that wasent explain properly because a lot of the videos go way to fast in my opinion.
Well thank you and please have a good day.

dd401tq granted, you're right that the value is lessened as a long-term member. But that's inevitable; the longer you're a member the less direct value you'll continue to get. This will always be a case of diminishing returns; at least so far as the courses go.

This is where we're trying to put a lot of focus on the Live Events, ensuring that we're continuing to explore more advanced subjects for anyone that has gone beyond the fundamentals.
