Price Change, Simplifying the Membership

Recently we launched a brand new version of CG Cookie with the goal to provide an engaging platform and experience for you to be a part of while learning to become a freelancer, getting a job in the industry or simply having a blast at your hobby.

Our mission is to go beyond being a training site.

Yes, your citizen subscription allows you to access hundreds of videos, arguably more hours than lecture hours of a $90k art degree, but that’s only the beginning. Going beyond video education, CG Cookie is a wealth of resources: engage with us and industry professionals through live events, challenge your skills with an exercise, gain critical feedback on your work in the gallery, monitor your personal roadmapand more.

We’re constantly trying to make your experience better and to do more to enable you. A side effect of this, unfortunately, is the need to revisit our pricing each year or so. It’s that time again.

After all of our research and testing we’ve landed on an updated pricing model that offers flexible payment terms with a straight forward offering.

Simplifying the Membership

Previously we offered two different monthly options, with and without downloads. This was intended to give more flexibility but in reality it just complicated our pricing for customers while adding complexity to the site. Not many people really understood the difference between “Citizen” and “Citizen Pro”, or “Basic” and “Pro”. We’ve decided to go back to basics. One plan, three different payment term options. What you see is what you get.

The new plans are slightly more expensive than their previous equivalents, $2 increase on Pro Monthly for example. This is necessary for the continued long-term health of CG Cookie.

If you're currently on the $21/mo Citizen Basic you continue to enjoy the lower monthly rate. If you'd like to add downloads, partner discounts and live event critiques you would need to update to the $29/mo Citizen Monthly, your first month will be prorated if you upgrade.

When is this happening?

The price change will take effect on November 14th, 2017.

If you have an active subscription then don’t fret. Your price will never change so long as your subscription is active. You’ll only pay the new price if you choose to cancel and then come back.

I imagine you have some questions, please post them below or email us. Additionally, I will be hosting a Live Event on Nov 15th @5pm covering Learning with CG Cookie.

Thanks for supporting the Cookie. 🍪

    I hate being broke. :(

  • Thiago Lopes (capawsome)

8(38% if im correct) bucks on monthly is quite a big price raise....

    Jonathan Williamson (jonathanwilliamson)

capawsome we've gone back to the prior plan design, where all plans get download access, perks, etc. The prior Pro Monthly, which is equivalent to the new Citizen Monthly, was $27. That's where the $2 increase comes from.

Previously monthly members could not download videos, submit to live critiques, or access the Pro perks.

  • Nyz -- (nyz)

It's okay I suppose. I'm new here and I was flabbergasted how much content and how high quality everything is here
(Seriously when it comes to other subjects many websites charge way more for way less quality) considering how "cheap" (Using the word cheap in a relative manner since I'm aware that 20-30 bucks can be a lot depending on your circumstance) . I do appreciate a lot that they won't be changing the pricing for existing customers.

  • skaverat

I hope there will be at least more courses for that price jump. For example, the last blender course was released at the end of september.

  • John Crawford (vaculik)

Do existing monthly subscribers get access to the new perks like downloading videos?

Also, what skaverat said. Even with the old price, I think more content should've been coming out.

skaverat actually a new lesson for Shader Forge was just published on Tuesday:

We're always working to keep a flow of new training, but we're also putting a lot of time into improving the overall experience and ability to test what you learn through exercises, live critique events, and of course the learning flows.

  • cerberusgfx

Thanks for grandfathering in current subscribers to the new model, this looks a lot better for everyone in the long run; having access to video downloads and critiques is a huge boon.

  • Omar Domenech (dostovel)

The most awesome perk I've seen is retaining the original price of when you first subscribed, that surely is the number one incentive for anyone not to ever cancel their subscription.

Be sure to put the ice coffee BEHIND the Mac!!! (In the picture above.)
That's an accident waiting for a time to happen when a container of liquid it is placed next to a keyboard.

  • Carey Butler (heurist)

("Behind the Mac", but still in your view, of course!)

heurist I'm guilty of spilling drinks on laptops...most of us probably are. Whoops!

  • crew
    Jonathan Williamson (jonathanwilliamson)

vvaculik there are no plans to change the access of the $21/month plan. That wouldn't be fair to our customers that're on the prior Pro Monthly plan.

  • bitblox (btiblox)

The thing that's great about the price change is now the Citizen Monthly can download videos witch is nice. So Monthly may be good later down the road If lets say I want to check up on CG Cookie, I can just get monthly and download the new coarse I've always wanted. And the price is still relativity cheap for what you get. But what ever you do please don't raise it again XD

  • crew
    Jonathan Williamson (jonathanwilliamson)

btiblox we really don't like raising prices so we'll do our best to not change it again for as long as possible!

  • libcrypt

I don't mind the price increase, but I wish I could prevent auto-renewal. If I want one month, I'd prefer to buy that and not have to think about it again.

  • mcchopper

Thahts quite a big price increase from 21$ to now 29$ as an entry point.
I find the price to be too expesnsive now for the content offered. New Blender courses are just added to infrequently. In addition i think there are alot of Tutorials on this site that lack real value and are more of "look like i do it" instead of explaining the meaning behind of it., I expect a increase of Tutorial quality for the price increase, The site just lacks to much stuff , there is nothing like a blender -Unreal workflow or really good topology guides and many videos are just outdated.

llibcrypt you can do this by simply cancelling after upgrading. You can do this via your dashboard:

  • thelexx

Currently I can not download HD videos. Does this mean I can after Nov 14th ? Many thanks.
