I only used matcaps from blender 2.8 and it was rendered with the workbench renderer, as for box cutter and hardops, yes they are quite useful and handy, in fact i tried approaching this project before using SubD and It took me like 2 hours just to model the cover which is on the top of the sphere. later that day I asked on some forum if there is any better approach for such a project and someone recommended hardops and box cutter so definitely go for it ;)
It's a very good start! With some nice textures and shaders, I'm sure that will be very nice!
And just for know, Hardops and BoxCutter are they really useful for this style of modeling??
