I seem to have an uncanny ability to challenge Blender and test its limits: the 'whole' sword took 100,000 (one hundred thousand!!!) samples, plus the de-noising; the insets were 12000 samples each - and, as you see, no de-noising helped. Besides, the thing took 6+GB of my GPU's memory (a good thing it has 8GB). I have a project in mind that would feature this scimitar, but I'll have to figure out the way to render it one layer at a time (and find the time to complete it).
