Live Event Wishlist

Hey everyone, this coming year will be a big year for us in terms of live streams. We plan on doing a lot more live streams more often and with that we'd like to create some standard times and dates. We have specific days already set, but we'd like to know what times would work best.

We know that we have members from all over the world, so having a time that would allow us to be live when most of our members would be able to attend would be ideal. Of course this also has to fall in line with our availability as well.

With that said I'd also like to take this opportunity to gauge interest in other things we could be doing during live streams that you all would like to see. These are the questions I'd like answered:

  • Does a live stream time of 2CT (Central Time) work for you? If not, what is a better time during the week (Tue/Wed/Thur)?
  • What would you like to see covered more often in Live streams? Any in particular that you really enjoyed?
  • Classes are being introduced next month, would you like to see more classes for different subjects? If so which?
  • How often are you available to watch live streams per week?
  • Would you prefer live streams over recorded content?
  • What would you add to improve the live stream experience? Before, during or after live streams as well.
We'd really like to make live streams a top notch resource for all of our members, and we can only improve them through your help. If you have any live streams that you really enjoy watching outside of CGCookie we'd also like to know, thanks!

  • Good that this is being raised!

    • Does a live stream time of 2CT (Central Time) work for you? If not, what is a better time during the week (Tue/Wed/Thur)?
    > 2CT means 9am for me in Sweden, so not impossible as I won't be sleeping yet somehow not easy to handle as I would be at the office at that time of the day. But once in a while it's fairly OK. Tue/Wed/Thursday doesn't really matter then.
[edit] just figured I mixed up am and pm --' so 9 pm is perfect !

    • What would you like to see covered more often in Live streams? Any in particular that you really enjoyed?
    > I really enjoyed the live critique! It was great to get live feedback, not only from you guys but also from the comment sections.

    • Classes are being introduced next month, would you like to see more classes for different subjects? If so which?
    > I would be interested in more advanced hard surface modelling and photo-realistic rendering. On top of that, the possibility to do some workshop (something like "let's build interior together") could be a fun way to meet and enhance the classes experience. There's perhaps possibility to organize some sort of conf'call where the attending people can share their screen and show live their progress ? For game development, it can be the opportunity to live test a game as well. I don't know how many people usually attend, so if it's scalable, that'd be awesome.

    • How often are you available to watch live streams per week?

    > Once or twice a week max for me.

    • Would you prefer live streams over recorded content?
    > This echoes a little bit a previous question. The benefit of live content is the interaction, so I'd prefer have live content for things such as group workshop and live critique. Recorded content are great for long courses. We can pause anytime, the content is never interrupted by the comment sections etc.

    • What would you add to improve the live stream experience? Before, during or after live streams as well.

    > I would improve the comment sections, so we can "raise hand", have the possibility to share my screen to other as well (like in conference meetings). It basically comes back to the group workshop idea.

I am fully aware that maybe my wishes are tough to grant but hey, if that can help improving the global experience it's not vain!

Finally, just a few words to congratulate you guys from CGC crew to keep improving the service, your're doing an awesome job!

Does a live stream time of 2CT work for you?

I have an 8am-5pm weekdays job. I go to lunch from 12m to 2 pm and live streams have been in that time frame which has been awesome for me.

What would you like to see covered?

Live Streams have been diverse, I've enjoyed the mixture of doing 3D live, Interviews, Ask Me Anything and so on. Other areas and advance topics of CGI would be great, texturing, rigging, modeling, lighting, compositing, VFX, motion graphics, etc.

Introduction to Classes and more subjects?

Sure! more subjects and topics. Also though, I guess we'll have to see how classes go.

    Availability?

Weekdays at lunch breaks from work (12m-2pm), then after 6pm and then on weekends. I live in Santo Domingo Rep Dom, according to google Central Time for me is: 3am CTS is 5am Santo Domingo.

Would you prefer live streams over recorded content?

No. I think Live Streams are great, it has it's own set of benefits, but not as to entirely outweigh recorded content. It's like asking what would you prefer, your heart or your lungs... you can't have one or the other, they are part of a whole. Quick pros and cons...

    - Live Streams pros: Sense of community with the chat, direct interaction with tutors, chance to ask questions in real time, direct feedback, live demos, classroom feeling, you can have guests on, community contributes knowledge and a good joke or two can put on some smiles :)

    - Live Streams cons: Global audiences with different time zones, main stage pressure leads to rapidly brain overload, easily loose focus while chatting, personal life could get in the way during a life stream, no editing for mundane tasks or human error, technical failures have bigger impacts, requires on-camera personality and maybe your wardrobe feels under pressure.

    - Recorded pros: Reverse livestream cons.

    - Recorded cons: Reverse livestreams pros.

    Improve Live Streams Experience?

More on the technical side... sometimes audio goes messy, without HD quality most of the time you can't see the UI of the softwares.

Thanks for the input! The technical issues we have with live streams are a nightmare on our end. Unfortunately our software often times has issues with audio, or just randomly disconnecting others connected through the stream. We are currently looking into more stable software or systems that will allow us to stream without the headaches and possibly also improve how we interact with our members.

Things like getting the option to upvote questions those in chat would like to see answered and/or a questions "queue" is something we're looking at implementing in the future.

Ideally for times we'd like to have something that would cover the vast majority of our members, but sometimes the huge time difference doesn't quite line up. 2CT for me is 12pm, same with Jonathan Lampel, but for Kent he's about 3 hours ahead of us putting the live streams he does at 3pm local time for him.

I like to think of classes as mini workshops, so we plan on making live streams more interactive by ensuring members are not just watching but actively involved. Live streams tend to involve more commitment, so we'd like to ensure that we're providing solid value with them. If you have any more input outside of the questions posted let us know, thanks!

    • Does a live stream time of 2CT (Central Time) work for you? If not, what is a better time during the week (Tue/Wed/Thur)
Unfortunately for me, I miss every livestream that is at this time as in the UK it is 5PM and that is exactly when I finish work. The older times suited myself better as they fell at 8PM I believe , which was perfect. I am free every night other than Tuesdays. Obviously that is only my circumstance, but If you have a large UK base of members then anyone with the regular 9-5 job from UK/Ireland and parts of Europes close by will miss this time. Im assuming Saturdays are out of the question? I am only asking this since people generally tend to be more free on Saturdays so you could probably get a much larger worldwide audience if the time was right.
    • What would you like to see covered more often in Live streams? Any in particular that you really enjoyed?
Personally, anything Blender. I (And I'm sure Omar will agree) , would like to see more content on post processing and compositing, and also , I am currently working on a large personal project that is in a pixar/dreamworks stylised style and I have really struggled to find anything on that sort of style and how to achieve it.
    • Classes are being introduced next month, would you like to see more classes for different subjects? If so which?

Yes, the subjects mentioned in the last question.

    • How often are you available to watch live streams per week?

Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday are my best days

    • Would you prefer live streams over recorded content?

Either works for me personally. I wouldn't move away from recorded content, as I think a good balance of both is ideal.

    • What would you add to improve the live stream experience? Before, during or after live streams as well.

In the livestreams I've managed to see, I've found them to be a bit choppy and laggy, with technical issues, and particularly Wayne's animation critique livestream recently was in 220p or something, due to technical issues and it was very hard to see what was going on and to follow along.

  • Ok here my input:

    • Does a live stream time of 2CT (Central Time) work for you? If not, what is a better time during the week (Tue/Wed/Thur)?
As a german 2CT means 9pm for me. That´s the perfect time for me to watch streams. Maybe I can´t watch the whole stream if it gets too long.
Wednesday would be optimal for me but every suggested day seems good.
    • What would you like to see covered more often in Live streams? Any in particular that you really enjoyed?
Not really. As a new member of CG Cookie I just need to figure things out and see what you provide on your livestreams. I take what you give to me. ;)
    • Classes are being introduced next month, would you like to see more classes for different subjects? If so which?
I really love the idea of yours to try classes out. I hope they turn out well and become a regular part of CGCookie. I recommend you to stick with one type of class first to evaluate the feedback. Then to build up on that with the next class. So your first class is a Introduction to Blender. Cover in the next month a subject more deeply like modelling and build up on that step by step ... if the response of the classes is good you can create more with different variations.
I personally like to idea of classes building up each month. You already provide a variety of knowledge with your buffet of courses (which can be confusing if you are a beginner). The classes could be the alternative to that buffet - taking people by the hand with an solid curriculum. You could establish a fixed schedule for basic classes running maybe twice a year and create in addition special classes - of interesting subjects you want to cover
My point here is - I prefer a well thought schedule (like a semester at school) for the classes and the subject matter will emerge out of that.
    • How often are you available to watch live streams per week?
I am not quite a fan of watching live streams because it is quite demanding to sit down on a certain time and take the time to filter information of one or two hours which could be summed up in 20 minutes. But I will give it once a week a chance. ;)
    • Would you prefer live streams over recorded content?
Depends on what. Recorderd content is strong to deliver filtered and summed up information. Live streams are giving a personal touch, are more motivating and strenghtens the community. To get critique of my homework, to watch you ranting and thinking and to get in touch with you about whatever topic I really prefer livestream. For learning and improving my knowledge I rather prefer recorded content.

    Thanks for the input everyone!

    • Does a live stream time of 2CT (Central Time) work for you? If not, what is a better time during the week (Tue/Wed/Thur)?
Pretty good time. Maybe an hour earlier would be even better. But people from all the globe its impossible to make suit everybody. Tue or Wed should be a sweet spot.
    • What would you like to see covered more often in Live streams? Any in particular that you really enjoyed?
Maybe live critique, as other users mentioned. Perfect example would be Wayne's live event where he done that. You get so much more info live than in the comments and with live examples.
    • Classes are being introduced next month, would you like to see more classes for different subjects? If so which?
Composing and VFX. Like Compositing a 3D Monster into a Live Action Scene, Green Screen Compositing but with more depth and issues. Maybe a detailed rigging course (Wayne rigging Rivet and other bots?)
    • How often are you available to watch live streams per week?
    Once a week.
    • Would you prefer live streams over recorded content?
I suppose those have different roles, live streams are great for live critique, questions/answers but if you want to get more concentrated information in shorter time recorded content is better.
