I thougt about opening a sketchbook, since I´m drawing a lot lately. Sooooo, here it is!
Thoughts about my art and CC is appreciated!
Most recent piece:
Practice #7 (not too satisfied with this one D: )
# 8 Pinkie (not so happy with this one)
fide my favourites are practise #6 and #7! Why you are not satisfied? What was your intention for that last two pieces?
fide I must agree with Jonas. I actually think #7 is my favourite, it looks the most natural to me and also seems to have the best anatomical proportions along with #6. Then again maybe it's just because I like cats. Good work keep it up.
P.S. for the sake of constructive criticism, the thing that stands out to me the most is the neck, particularly the 'V' shape. It seems a bit strong and deep. When I imagine that in 3D, it feels a little intense.
cptken meadoc I don´t like the eyes on #7. She looked a bit cross eyed when I drew the pupils, that was the main reason why I erased them. Another point was the hairstyle. I wanted to make a fancier one, but failed as well. That´s why she got a pretty basic haircut.
cptken Is the V of the neck of #7 still too sharp? Got that critique point prior and tried to make it a bit more smoothly.
fide True it is a little more subtle in #7 than previous ones but still quite strong. In #7 particularly as it approaches the edge of the neck it almost looks like its sticking out the side a bit.
Edit: Having a look at some anatomy references the 'V' shape is stronger closer to the collar bone and becomes more subtle the further it goes up. Additionally the thickness seems to be thinner the lower it is and it widens out further up. In the "void area" in the middle of the 'V' the neck seems to also come out a bit and isn't completely concave. Of course this is more prominent in men with the adam's apple but it's still not completely concave on women either.
Although I'm not a woman, I noticed on my own neck that the 'V' only sticks out prominently like in your drawings when I turn my head. When I turn my head right the left tendon pokes out quite a lot and the right one pretty much disappears and vice versa.
I personally find these subtle things are pretty hard to get right. I'd recommend the best thing to do is to look at some anatomy pictures, understand even the muscle and tendon structure beneath the surface and how it works and moves and this will help you understand how it should look even in different poses. Also it may be a little weird but try to feel your own neck and try to understand it in 3D, this should help you understand it in 2D better.
cptken Thank you very much for the suggestions. I really need to make it a habit to use reference. I often draw without out of habit, but the more I draw and dwell onto realism, I realise how important reference is....
fide Yeh reference and anatomy is really important. It's something I've realised recently myself. I used to think that even for unique creations that don't exist in the real world or stylized drawings you don't need to know anatomy. However, I was dead wrong because if you want to stylize the human body you need to know what it should look like un-stylized. Well that's my opinion anyway.
Anatomy reference books are great but personally my problem is that I have to actually open them and look for the reference I want. I'm planning on investing on some 3D ecorche figures to supplement the books I have. That way it sits on my desk all the time right next to me when I'm doing 3D or 2D. The fact that it is just there 100% of the time makes it super easy to reference and you don't really have to think about it. They can be pricy for good ones though so I'll have to save up :(
cptken I was like that at the beginning as well. When I started to draw, back when I was 12, I just followed the instructions from the anime/ manga drawing books I had with already stylized anatomy and continued to use this wrong anatomy until I was 18. I started to use reference just some years ago, when I decided that I want to become serious with my art, but I often still don´t use reference out of habit.
Oh well, I have tons of anatomy reference books lying around, but yeah... they are just lying around :X Most of the time I´m too lazy to pic them up to learn... Need to get rid of this lazyness...
Mh.. I have a female figma to pose, but I rarely use her. I normally look for reference picture on the internet when I draw.
#9 Raven inspired OC (I messed up the hairline D: )
I found some nice textured brushes and REALLY want to start to include them in my drawings somehow, but I still need to get the fundamentals down before adding fancy stuff (like textures)
Male Body base
Karan Character Sheet
A friend of mine asked me to draw his D&D character ^^
It was hard, since I´m not used to draw males. But I try to step out of my comfort zone anyway and am quiet satisfied with the result!
Bust Sketch PracticeWho do you like best?
(I´m currently coloring my favorite x3 )
fide the first doe hair second one face and rest of upper body. so i like the first 2 on left side
Cute elf girl from the bust sketches
The ear looks like it´s not attached to the head, the rest looks fine I guess öö C&C is always appreciated!
Another colored one from the bust sketches. I will add some clothing once I continue to work on the other two! Not sure yet what she should wear and what would fit her character :/
C&C is always welcomed!
Still lacking a lot of the fundamentals, so I´m back doing figure drawings, learning proportions, draw more realistic stuff and so on. Here´s a semirealistic eye, I accidentally cropped out the figure drawing practice while working on the eye x_x
Sideview and coloring practice. Something´s wrong with her forehead. Too round? Can´t really tell... C&C appreciated!
fide somehow i think the forehead isnt bad but maybe the hair looks a bit flat on the topside if you look ? not sure i am not the best anatomicly drawer but somehow i think if you pull the hair a bit more rounder it might solve the problem .
yyukinoh1989 I made some changes according to critiques from my fb page and yours. Flattened the forehead just a bit, rounded the hair, put the eye a bit up and more to the left. What do you say?
fide this looks really great. i really love it this way :) awesome job done .
I didn´t have much time and inspiration to draw in the past months, but I try to come back to it.
Here´s what I´m working on atm:
I already started rendering it and should be finished by next weekend. I wanted to have it finished already, but examns are coming up and I have to focus on studying D:
Aaaalso, I try to achieve my new year´s resolution: drawing everyday even if it´s just scribbeling >_< Hope I can keep it up
fide Nice character. Her dress seems like a cross between a barmaid and a pirate which is cool :D However, her fingers seem like they're at a wrong angle and long compared to the size of the hand.
drgnclw thank you! I wanted to draw an elven thief ^^
Yeah, the hand is wrong, I´m working on it atm, the rest is finished already. Hands are one of the things I REALLY need to practice
I just wanted to practice first and make it some kind of warm up before continuing with the elven thief, but I wanted to draw clear lines for once. It took me way too long and I didn´t work on the elf that day....
I´ll try to finish the elf during this weekend though öö
fide I really love this elf. The elven thief consept also is amazing. Also good job on the portraits but I love the way you did those 2 a lot. Keep this up
yyukinoh1989 Thank you very much! I really dig this way of coloring skin!
Playing around with textured brushes and a new way to color skin.
I hated it that the skin of my characters looked like plastic and I think I finally found a way to make it better. Another picture with the same approach is in the making! x3
I was able to keep the skin coloring style, but I´m still looking for a way to color hair and clothes, so it all fits together öö
Thanks for sharing your portraits. Very nice progress by time. Deeper, more subtle.
I liked n. 7; the girl with the red hair from october and the male character.
From my prespective it was striking to note the difference between males and females painting. Your male character looks like a normal human being, while your females more of a beauty/sex objects. Their body position, their strong total gaze, perects skin... it feels more like mythological creatures than real beings. The photo vs portrait.. the photo shows a girl with some mess in her hair, an irony in the gaze, some life's charge on her shoulders... normal human being...
You seem to have an accurate hand... which means you could express, portray the more subtle details.
You are doing fine... just keep painting;)
donbonbon Thank you for your feedback!
The reason why the male character looks like a normal human being is because he was commissioned that way! :D He´s a normal human male in his 40s with burn marks from an old accident. If I would draw males the way I wanted, they would have something mytical on them as well. Just take a look at the male from the bust sketch practice. It´s just a theme I really like.
Once I´m more comfortable with drawing males there will be more drawings of them as well!
I can agree with the portrait, I failed to capture her kind of sarcastic gaze, I hope I become more acurate with copying emotions/expressions in the future.
fide actually it felt you are more confortable with drawing males than females. Your females were too perfect (the earlier, as I mentioned).. it risks to convey them more like objects and less like real being. As for the male, I could relate to him because he was more human ad thus he's strong, he made a choice, crossed his Rubicon exactly why he felt mythical. The girl with the red hair is getting, she has anger and desire, that of 17.01 as well, the greyish hair is a nice choice, normal lips, more of an irony... normalize them more if I may say, it touched more... my two simple eyes nothing more;)
Since I´m done with my university stuff, I finally have time again for drawing and Blender!
Heres a WIP of what I´m working atm. A loose drawing with the intention to get back on track
I got a bit carried away by gaming. Took me longer than planned because of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 __@
It´s really hard to get back to art after a long break D:
Anyway, here´s my current wip. I try to stuck with the more realistic style from now on!
