Is there a way to have blender check for zero area faces and auto remove those? If not, how does one check if the mistake went undetected?

Jonathan Williamson (jonathanwilliamson)Yep! Enable the 3D Print Toolbox add-on and then in Edit Mode click Degenerate, followed by Zero Faces to select any zero-area faces. Then you can either delete them, collapse the edges, or otherwise fix them as you wish. Here's a screenshot: http://cl.ly/f1Bp
